The Rise of Luigi Leftism

On December 4 2024, a young man named Luigi Mangione killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. While the murder itself was chilling, the response from the Political Left showed signs of a deeper problem.

Some wrote love letters:

Some integrated Luigi into their branding:

Some explicitly stated they want insurance executives dead:

These were the early signs of Luigi Leftism, where people, even if they are unwilling to harm another human personally, will glamorize those who do and openly wish death on those they dislike. In simple terms, Luigi Leftism is the celebration of political violence.

Even recently, over a year later, people on the Left are attempting to rationalize Thompson’s murder:

They accuse Thompson of things like “Legal Murder” or “Social Murder” as if these fake concepts somehow justify Luigi Mangione gunning him down.

Brian Thompson was not the only case where we saw signs of Luigi Leftism; the response to the attempted assassinations of Donald Trump and the successful assassination of Charlie Kirk were deeply worrying.

There have been multiple attempts on President Trump’s life, with the most well-known occurring in Butler, Pennsylvania, that produced this famous image:

The response from many on the Left was to hint at the shooting being staged:

Or lament that the shooter had missed:

Since then, there have been more attempts on President Trump’s life. Thankfully, none have succeeded. Unfortunately, that was not the case when it came to Charlie Kirk.

We saw what was perhaps the most significant political assassination of the 21st century with the murder of Charlie Kirk. While the response from many prominent Democrat politicians like Barack Obama and Joe Biden has been to condemn the violence, many on the Left do not share their sentiments.

Some mocked Kirk’s wife and children:

Some spread false claims about Kirk’s beliefs:

Some implied Kirk deserved it for his 2nd Amendment stance:

And the examples could go on endlessly. An account on 𝕏, Reddit Lies, documented the fallout since Kirk’s assassination on Reddit; one thread on the page has thousands of replies.

Charlie Kirk had also observed the issue of Assassination Culture growing on the Left:

Assassination Culture is what Luigi Leftism boils down to. While most people are unwilling to commit murder, the response from Leftists to events over the past few years is creating the conditions for more crazy individuals to pick up arms and go after political enemies; in other words, they are creating an unspoken permission structure.

The stories that received widespread coverage are concerning on their own merits, but looking at the data paints a troubling picture.

Thought diversity is more a feature of the Political Right, while the Political Left only allows for a small set of viewpoints:

Even universities, which are supposed to be centers of learning and diverse viewpoints challenging one another, are dominated by the Left; Democrats greatly outnumber Republicans in faculty headcounts:

So what happens when you have an ideologically intolerant group with low exposure to different viewpoints? You get a political Left that is more willing to end relationships with friends and family over politics:

In other words, the Left is less tolerant than the Right. On top of all that, people on the political Left exhibit mental illness at higher rates than people on the political Right:

Mental illness is so prominent on the Left that over 50% of young Liberal Women have been diagnosed with a mental health condition.

Most who are Left of Center think the murder of Donald Trump would be (at least partially) justified:

Liberals are more likely than Conservatives and Moderates to think it's justified for citizens to use violence to achieve political goals, as shown here:

Young Liberals are especially open to violence. The Skeptic Research Center has also produced similar results with 44% of people who are “Very Liberal” and 28% of people who are “Liberal” believing that ‘violence is often necessary to create social change.’

Skeptic also found:

• The highly educated are the most supportive of political violence, with 36% of people with graduate or professional degrees supporting damaging property and 40% believing ‘violence is necessary to create social change.’

• Young people, across all races, are open to violence as a method for social change, with a majority (53%) of Black Gen Z showing support for the idea.

Why is the Left like this? One reading of the data is that the Left is less tolerant, less ideologically diverse, more mentally ill, and more open to political violence.

People can interpret the data as they wish, but it’s reasonable to observe the basic fact that people on the Left are more open to violence, with younger members of the Left signalling more support.

For a long time, the Left has used allies in the media to demonize political opponents. They have likened President Trump to people like Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini:

They have accused Elon Musk of giving Nazi salutes:

Of course, these accusations are silly and lack merit. Donald Trump is not a Nazi and has condemned White Supremacy many times and Elon Musk made the gesture saying “my heart goes out to you.” How many assassination attempts will it take for Leftist Media to stop making irresponsible Nazi comparisons?

Given the rise of Luigi Leftism, now would be a good time.

It’s worth noting that the media’s bad-faith arguments can always be applied in reverse; for example, if Elon’s ‘my heart goes out to you ’ gesture was a Nazi salute, then there can be an argument made for these guys as well:

The point here is, context matters. The ideal scenario here is for everyone to demonize less, contextualize more, and start bringing down the temperature.

Luigi Mangione might have been a single murderer, but Luigi Leftism has become a broader issue infecting the Political Left. People on the Left, especially young people, are more open to using violence as a means for achieving political goals. What this means for the future of the Left, and the United States as a whole, if Luigi Leftism can’t be stopped, is chilling.
