After an organism has died, many of its cells continue living their own independent lives. Some remain metabolically active for hours. Others survive for days. Under the right conditions, certain cells can reorganize themselves into entirely new living structures.
Researchers have proposed that this phenomenon represents a kind of “third state”—not fully life as we typically define it, nor death.
We speak of death as though it occurs in a single moment. But biology disagrees in some ways. Different organs die at different rates. Skin cells outlive neurons. Hair follicles, stem cells, immune cells, and connective tissues each have their own biological clocks. Long after the body ceases functioning as a coordinated whole, countless individual cells are still repairing damage, consuming energy, communicating with neighboring cells, and responding to their environment. Something I never really thought much about to be honest.
From the perspective of the organism, life has ended. From the perspective of many cells the story is still unfolding.
Death, it seems, is less like flipping off a light switch and more like watching the lights of a city gradually dim one neighborhood at a time.
The most surprising discoveries emerge when scientists study these surviving cells outside the body. Rather than degrading, some cells demonstrate adaptability. Researchers have engineered tiny multicellular structures known as xenobots, created from frog cells, and anthrobots, assembled from human cells. These microscopic living systems can move, cooperate, respond to their surroundings, and even assist in repairing damaged neurons under lab conditions. They emerge from cells whose original organism has already died. The cells are no longer participating in the life of the body they once belonged to. Instead, they reorganize into something entirely new, expressing abilities that were never observed while they were part of their original organism. The cells, in a sense, discover another way of being.
Mind-blowing.
This research destabilizes one of biology’s oldest assumptions. So, “alive” and “dead” are not binary categories anymore… you can think of then as endpoints on a spectrum though.
