Why Market Comes Before Trends

Everything in commercial design comes back to one thing: the market you’re designing for.

Every decision flows from the market: colour, style, motifs, and yes, trends.

A trend can look incredible, but if it doesn’t suit your market, it doesn’t belong in your collection. You don’t need to cover every trend. Not only is that impossible, it’s counterproductive. A collection that tries to do everything ends up feeling unclear, and when buyers are confused, they move on.

Trends come and go (often cycling back every 20 years)but there are always constants you can rely on. Take animal skins, for example. They never disappear entirely, but what’s relevant shifts. One season it’s python, another it’s leopard. Understanding these nuances is what keeps your work current without chasing every new idea.

Timing matters just as much as the trend itself. Has your customer embraced this look yet, or are they already moving on?

There’s no crystal ball, but knowing your client’s position in the market makes these decisions far easier. Fast‑fashion brands like Zara react almost immediately to runway direction. Other clients move more cautiously, taking time before adopting new looks. The same trend can be right for one and completely wrong for another.

And then there are trends best left alone. Some are simply too niche, too risky, or too limited in appeal. In those cases, it’s smarter not to invest time in developing them for your main collection. If a client specifically asks for something fringe, that’s when a bespoke design makes sense, without leaving you sitting on work no one else wants.

Clear market awareness protects your time, your energy, and ultimately your business.

If you want help navigating this, understanding which trends are moving through which markets right now, and how to interpret runway direction for commercial briefs, our Print Pattern Forecast does exactly that. Each edition breaks down the key trends of the season, the colour stories behind them, and how to make them work for specific product categories.
