Dear Friend,

Some time ago, I can’t recall exactly when, Ciaran, Luca and I started a very positive morning ritual (see the video below). As you can imagine, Luca loved it, and so did we.

Being here in Greece catapults me back to so many childhood memories, and as I shared last week, it is often the senses that ground us in a place and bring us home to the present moment.

Another positive habit I recommend, and one Ciaran and I have been practising for the last few years, is to read aloud a few pages of a book over breakfast. Something to reflect upon before the day has fully begun.

The book we are currently reading is Consolations II, The Solace, Nourishment and Underlying Meaning of Everyday Words by the poet and philosopher David Whyte. Rather than reading it in order, Ciaran and I have been randomly choosing a short section each morning. Last week I selected the word moon, without consciously realising there was a full moon that very week.

Interestingly enough, Whyte says…

“The moon works on and within the body in a way unregistered by the thinking mind. The moon and the moon’s pull on the body cannot be audited or fully accounted for, the moon works both by stealth and overwhelming, silent power. We intuit that he moon’s unconscious power exceeds the narrow consciousness we bring to our daylight ambitions.”

What is striking is that science quietly agrees with him. Research has shown that our sleep cycles, our hormones, and even our moods shift in response to the lunar cycle, often without us being consciously aware of it at all. The body knows things the mind has not yet been told.

So what is this ‘silent power,’ and how do we tap into it? Like any relationship in our lives, it comes down to time and intention. We take the time to be with the moon, and our intention becomes one of allowing it to speak to us so that we may absorb even an ounce of its wisdom.

Whyte also reminds us that the moon is sometimes seen in its full power only once a month, before it begins to wax or wane until it seems to disappear entirely. And yet what we see with the visible eye is never the full picture, the moon is always there, in one form or another. I take great solace from that. A wisdom that goes beyond the light of day, something deep, unconscious, and eternal.

So, why not try one (or both) of our practices outlined above? They take only a couple of minutes, but like anything done consistently, they begin to shape your entire being. Some days we forget one or both of them, and that is fine. These are not about adding another thing to your to-do list, but about a way of being that weaves gently into how you are choosing to live.

In other news, I am now reading the last few pages of Mrs Dalloway - Virginia Woolf at her most luminous, following one woman through a single day in London while the whole of life floods in around her.

We had some disappointing news that Luca didn’t get a room in the Irish College in Paris, but it looks very much like we have found a student apartment right beside his college, so that is a happy turn.

And I just have to share this…

Last week I was boasting about how our trusty 20-year-old Volvo started first time. Well, on Friday evening as we were leaving the beach to rush home to entertain some friends, the volvo was anything but ‘roaring!’ Dead battery. We stayed calm, despite the fact that we had no jump leads nor did anybody we asked and it was looking unlikely we would make it home anytime soon, until one cheerful Italian appeared and said, “why don’t we just push it?” Thankfully, it started immediately and we drove straight to a garage without stopping. My gratitude goes out to that lovely man, who seemed genuinely delighted to help us.

Sending my love to you, and to anyone in your life right now who could do with a little extra positive energy. Perhaps you might pass this along to them.
