While walking through my neighborhood, I bumped into someone taking her cat for a short walk. The cat’s name was Silky. Only seconds later, another cat, also on a leash, ran up beside her. That cat’s name was Rita. The owner was also very beautiful, but I forgot to ask for her name.

At the start of this week, while considering a coffee in a cafe that I don’t usually visit, I met yet another cat on a leash. The owner brought her into the cafe, sat down and worked on her laptop with the cat nestled perfectly on her lap. That cat’s name was Olive. I forgot to ask the owner her name.

During karaoke, when the instrumentals play, I meow. Every air guitar, strummed, is a shrill meow. I think I got that from my father. He said he would often randomly meow at home. Sometimes I found it a little annoying, having a friend over playing a game and having him walk into the living room, meowing. I suppose there’s no meows anymore, just the memory of it. I’ve somewhat picked up the mantle myself.

I don’t know why I’m so in love with cats. Obviously, there are many that feel the same way. The internet loves cats. Many dogs actually love cats as well and cats love themselves.

I don’t have the chance to have a cat currently, mostly because I’m somewhat in-between homes, so instead I live through the adventures of other cat owners. My friend Alexis is currently looking after two: one completely blind and another pocket sized.

Mimi (Mimikyu) is a blind cat that has trust issues and a lot of anxiety to overcome. The permanent bliss expression she wears hides much of it.

She has claws that she sometimes uses to share her pain with others. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be blind, let alone be a blind cat in a world that doesn’t care. Luckily she has Alexis and despite the struggle of adopting a traumatized cat amongst a bunny household, she’s slowly chipping away at the walls Mimi chose to erect.

Every so often Alexis sends me pictures of Mimi and the new little kitty she’s currently fostering: Betsy.

It seems Mimi and Betsy haven’t quite become best of friends. I look forward to hearing that they do as I get my updates. Betsy is very small, maybe too small, I have no doubt that Alexis’ will take care of her and right that wrong while I beg for new pictures on WhatsApp.

I’m still waiting for that Betsy hit.

At the top of my list for cat tales on Substack has to be Anoushka‘s post about the street cat she adopted. A rather emotional piece speaking to the grief she felt losing her previous cat and the gradual adoption of a cat from that street life to her current domesticated one.

If you want cats in your Substack Notes feed, be sure to Follow Carlos M. As I hide from the Notes algorithm, I find I miss these the most.

I hope you enjoyed reading this. There’s no lesson here. I just wanted to write about cats and I did.

If you like my writing and want to say thanks with a few dollars, please consider doing so via my ko-fi and not Substack
