It was so slippery we all slipped our shoes and boots had no grip slipping like fish and we held onto each other I had to hold Lee and make sure I didn’t pull him down instead because it’d be bad if he fell be bad if any of us fell the creakety bones then we walked as if on ice the paved road was slick with wet leaves and rain droplets making a mush greasy and tricky like banana skins devious yellow-brown bananas with clownish grin and glint in their eyes ready to make everyone tumbling down in a messy pile undignified as bowling pins just so they could have a laugh of the day in the boring bush so to stay upright we clutched at the air of nothingness no trees no roots no nothing held on for our lives going one precarious step at a time careful now careful don’t fall just don’t fall the only thing you need to do is to not fall only three hundred metres though how slow we were you weren’t wrong to think it was kilometres then finally we were on the other side thanking the fish gods and the nonchalant lake by our side that we would live another day to deliver the ashes to the mountain of the deads.
