Sergey Lavrov's message to Europe

Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov, the foreign minister of the Russian Federation, decided to respond to the Anglo-Franco-German ultimatum by writing an article and sending it to Politico EU. Owned by Axel Springer, the publisher that has NATO propaganda literally enshrined in its mission statement, Politico predictably declined to publish it.

At first glance, submitting an article to a liberal-globalist outlet in good faith seemed destined to backfire. But strip away the obligatory layers of diplomatese and what emerges is a series of rather clear signals from Moscow.

Because this flies so far over the heads of the Brussels crowd it might well be in orbit, allow me — as a translator with 25+ years of experience in parsing diplomatic language — to spell things out in simpler terms:

The real objective of Europe’s leaders, then, is not to negotiate with Russia. It is to shore up the Zelensky regime and preserve it as a launchpad for continued confrontation against Russia.

You might think this is painfully obvious, but Lavrov actually spelling it out means Moscow is aware that EU “diplomacy” is yet another Minsk Agreement-type ruse, and does not intend to fall for it again.

…the model of regional security built in Europe over decades, ever since the adoption of the Helsinki Final Act in 1975, has been destroyed by their own hands. And it will never be restored.

This is also huge. It’s important to remember that the Russians are painfully legalistic-minded. They actually took the HFA at face value and it took them forever to realize it was a ploy to destroy the Soviet Union, and that the West never really believed in it and violated it at every opportunity (e.g. Yugoslavia).

When Lavrov says “never” he means “never”, by the way.

Nothing will ever be the way it was.

The principle of equal and indivisible security, trampled upon by the Euro-Atlanticists, can be embodied within a new Eurasian architecture. When the time is ripe, Europe too will be able to join this great effort.

Read this carefully. The entire power dynamic has flipped, and instead of Russia begging to be admitted to the “European family of nations”, as some continental politicians fantasize, it’s Moscow that’s building a new Eurasian security architecture, which a (post-Brussels) Europe will have to beg to join.

The key point is that meaningful dialogue requires the restoration of trust, shattered by the anti-Russian actions of the West, and Europe as part of it, in the post-Cold War era. Trust can be recovered only through concrete steps that demonstrate a sincere commitment to moving away from using diplomacy as a cover for expansionist ambitions. Trust cannot be restored, nor can dialogue be resumed, through ultimatums such as the one issued to Russia in London on June 7, 2026.

So many words to get to a simple point: the trust is gone, you torched it, you need to do the work to rebuild it, and until then we have no intention of engaging with you.

Sending an article to Politico sort of undermines this message, but that’s balanced out by their predictable rejection, which proves the EU’s bad faith all over again.
