Exercise programming has always been messy. Every system, every guru, and every certification claims to have the answer for how humans should train. Look closer, though, and you’ll see that these philosophies aren’t just disagreements. They’re different attempts to solve the same riddle: what’s most fundamental to human movement?
The result is what I call the exercise programming conundrum—an industry fractured into camps, each with its own definition of “function.”
Now, let me preface this by saying there’s plenty of gray area where these philosophies overlap, and that’s exactly how I approach training clients. This also isn’t a rigid timeline of how fitness evolved but rather an exploration of the schools of thought that continue to shape it.
For most of modern fitness, the base of programming was simple: external patterns. Squats, deadlifts, presses, and pulls became the pillars of strength training. They’re easy to coach, measurable, and scale with progressive overload.
This philosophy makes sense. Squatting looks like standing up from a chair. Deadlifting looks like picking something up off the ground. Pressing looks like reaching overhead. If you could load these patterns and improve them, the thinking went, everything else would follow.
But there’s a flaw in the system. Pattern-based training assumes your joints can already do what the pattern demands. It assumes your hips can flex and rotate, your shoulders can move overhead freely, and your spine can handle load without compensating. For many people, those assumptions break down, and dysfunction builds beneath the strength.
As coaches noticed these gaps, another wave of programming philosophies emerged—this time emphasizing variety. The logic was clear: life and sport aren’t predictable, so why should training be?
The Gray Institute popularized this with its “movement matrices”—squat, lunge, and push-up variations performed in multiple planes and angles. Instead of just squatting up and down or lunging forward and back, athletes were challenged to move laterally, rotate, and blend directions. Multiplanar motion became the selling point, aiming to mimic the unpredictable nature of life and sport.
But the Gray Institute wasn’t alone. Functional training programs across the industry followed similar logic, incorporating agility ladders, unstable surfaces, or constantly changing drills. Their collective philosophy was simple: variety builds adaptability.
The trouble is, variety and multiplanar movement don’t always address readiness. You can change lunge directions all day long, but if your ankle won’t dorsiflex or your hip won’t rotate, you’re just moving dysfunction through different positions. The weak link is still the joint.
That realization sparked a different path. Instead of adding variety on top of faulty hardware, Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) asked: What if we fix the hardware first?
FRC builds resilience at the joint level:
Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs): daily joint hygiene to maintain usable ranges (deep dive here).
PAILs/RAILs: isometric strategies to expand and strengthen end ranges (explained here).
End-range lifts: loading tissues at their weakest points to bulletproof them.
This philosophy reframes the question. It doesn’t ask, “How do we squat better?” It asks, “Can your hips and ankles even squat in the first place?”
At its core is a blunt truth: you can’t move where you can’t move. Every pattern you load is capped by the joints beneath it.
While FRC focused inward, another camp looked outward—to locomotion.
The spinal engine theory suggests that walking, running, and throwing aren’t just basic movements; they’re the essence of being human. The spine drives these motions, with fascial lines transferring energy throughout the body. If that’s true, then programming should reflect it.
Two modern systems have built their identity here:
WeckMethod emphasizes rotational force, coiling mechanics, and what they call the coiling core. Exercises mimic sprinting, striking, and other locomotor mechanics. The belief is that athleticism isn’t built in straight lines—it’s born in rotation and spirals. We’ve written more on this in rotational movement training and coiling core basics.
Functional Patterns frames its system around the First Four human movement patterns: standing, walking, running, and throwing. These, they argue, are the evolutionary roots of human performance. Training focuses on integrating fascia, posture, and energy transfer so the body can execute these movements efficiently and without breakdown.
Both systems ask a provocative question: if locomotion made us human, shouldn’t it be at the center of how we train?
Each camp was born from a different problem:
Strength Training solves: how do we build strength in simple, repeatable patterns?
Variety-Based Systems solve: how do we prepare for the unpredictability of sport and life?
FRC solves: how do we make sure the joints themselves are functional before loading patterns?
WeckMethod & Functional Patterns solve: how do we reconnect training to the fundamental human motions of locomotion and throwing?
None of them is wrong. They’re just incomplete.
Strength training isn’t obsolete. It still builds capacity like nothing else. A stronger athlete usually performs better. A stronger person usually ages better.
But raw strength doesn’t guarantee transferable function. You can deadlift 400 lbs, but struggle to run without pain. You can bench press heavy, but you throw awkwardly. Strength is capacity, not fluency.
That’s why strength fits as a layer, not the foundation. It expands what’s possible—but only if the joints and locomotor systems underneath can handle it.
If the industry’s history has taught us anything, it’s that no single system is enough. The most resilient training likely blends all of these philosophies in the right order:
Joints first (FRC). Restore function at the hardware level.
Locomotion second (WeckMethod & Functional Patterns). Train the body to move like a human again.
Strength and variety third. Build horsepower through classic lifts, then expand adaptability with multiplanar and variable inputs.
This hierarchy builds from the inside out. It ensures that your joints are prepared, your spine and fascia can transfer force efficiently, and your muscles can generate capacity without breaking down.

The exercise programming conundrum isn’t about who’s right or wrong. It’s about recognizing that each philosophy answers a different question in the broader quest for general physical preparedness.
Strength asks: how much can you lift?
Variety asks: can you adapt across planes?
FRC asks: do your joints actually work?

The truth is, we need all of them—but in the right order. When you zoom out, the future of training is clear: build joints first, refine locomotion second, and layer strength and variety last. That’s the formula for a body that isn’t just strong, but truly prepared.
And while this hierarchy provides structure, it doesn’t mean training is strictly linear. You can (and should) weave joint-centric work into strength sessions, or integrate spinal engine concepts into traditional lifts. The systems overlap more than they compete—and the best results come when they inform one another.
