During my time in the military a few weeks ago, I noticed an interesting phenomenon. When our squad or platoon did something bad, for example we were late for formation or forgot to greet a petty officer, instructors always did the punishment together with us. Be it push ups, holding a chair, or other exercises they came up with.
I saw the same phenomenon later, during our finishing 31 hour exercise. Just like us, instructors wore their armored vests and heavy backpacks on 30+ Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) heat in open fields.
Only when I returned home did I realise their choice to participate was not random. In fact, it was the same leadership principle used by Alexander, Caesar, Napoleon, and every great military leader, to inspire morale and make soldiers follow them till the end.
It’s fighting on the frontline.
Instead of leading in comfort, a great leader leads from the front lines. This one leadership trick is what made soldiers love and follow Caesar, Alexander, Napoleon, Sulla, Gaius Marius, and many more commanders. And what made us finish our course with eagerness and determination.
