☀️ Good Morning:
This story is completely detached from reality.
It is written from a kitchen table in Queens, Far Rockaway, a need-to-paint-the-fence-white town in Connecticut.
It’s a founding story of sorts.
The Amazin’ Mets. A train station in a town once left behind by heavy machinery and again by delicate silicone. Pens still work in this town. Ink on paper. A weathered finger pointing to the team (New York NL) at the bottom of the standings and pushing it to the top.
If I wanted to become a front-runner, I would have been a Yankee fan, this person says.
The 2026 Mets have been pronounced dead. At 52–67, they sit in last place in the division. Only two teams are worse in the entire National League. They are 11 games back in the wild card.
To reach the postseason, they would need to do the impossible. Something like what the Red Sox have done over the past six weeks. That’s winning nearly every single night, on top of the five out of six they have now won.
33–10 over the final 43, after trading away a large chunk of their roster, would require a miracle.
I root for this team precisely because I believe in miracles, a Mets fan says.
I suppose that’s what keeps bringing us together with this newsletter.
🗓️ UP NEXT: After taking two of three from the Pirates, Andy Green’s team travels to Atlanta to try to put even more twinkles in the dreamy fan’s eyes. The Braves were cooled off a bit over the weekend against the Yankees, but have won nine of 11. The Amazins will send the believe-in-the-future trio of Christian Scott, Nolan McLean and Zac Thornton to the mound over the three-game set.
📰 ABOVE THE FOLD
If only they looked like this in April.
We thought the last two months would leave us with a group of young players to give us reason to keep watching, but there are actually some veterans making a case for our attention.
