You notice how your spouse reacts.
You notice how they communicate.
You notice how quickly they become angry, how easily they withdraw, how difficult it is for them to trust, or how they seem unable to let certain things go.
And eventually, you begin to think:
“If only my spouse would change, our marriage would be better.”
But marriage can become much more complicated when we realize that we are not only bringing ourselves into marriage. We are bringing our history with us.
Every person enters a relationship carrying lessons they learned long before they met their spouse.
Some learned that anger gets you heard.
Some learned that silence keeps you safe.
Some learned that affection must be earned.
Some learned never to depend on anyone.
Some learned that conflict means someone is about to leave.
Some learned that keeping the peace is more important than expressing how they really feel.
And many people don’t even know they learned these things.
They simply call them “my personality.”
What if it is a pattern?
What if the reason you find it difficult to receive love is connected to what love looked like in your childhood?
What if your fear of abandonment is connected to what you experienced growing up?
What if the way you respond to conflict was shaped by watching the adults around you handle disagreement?
What if some of the things you are fighting about in your marriage are actually being intensified by wounds neither of you has addressed?
This doesn’t mean your spouse is innocent when they hurt you.
It doesn’t mean your childhood gives you permission to hurt someone else.
And it certainly doesn’t mean you should blame your parents for every difficulty in your marriage.
It means you should become curious about your patterns.
Because you cannot change something you refuse to examine.
A person can spend years saying:
“I will never have a marriage like my parents.”
And still unconsciously repeat parts of it.
Not because they wanted to.
But because familiar patterns can feel normal even when they are unhealthy.
You can reject your parents’ marriage consciously while repeating some of its emotional patterns unconsciously.
And this is how cycles continue.
Not because people don’t love their families.
But because sometimes love alone isn’t enough to break a pattern.
Awareness is needed.
Understanding is needed.
New skills are needed.
And sometimes, intentional healing is needed.
Instead of only asking:
“What’s wrong with my spouse?”
Ask:
“What did both of us learn about relationships before we met each other?”
That question can change the conversation.
Because your spouse has a story.
And so do you.
The goal isn’t to use those stories as excuses.
The goal is to understand them well enough to stop allowing the past to control the future.

You don’t have to be ashamed of where you came from.
You don’t have to pretend it didn’t affect you.
You simply have to decide that the story doesn’t have to end where it began.
