Gilded Olympia: Dawn of Man | Wanda Polaroids | Historical; Fantasy, Epic Thriller and Horror (N) (I) (F)

It is 1893 New York City. Themis and Zeus are seeking to quail Poseidon’s colonial campaign in Africa through war. The echos of the Trojan war sing again, and even though centuries have past, the Gods never truly change. Rosemary Spencer is fourteen, Scottish-Greek, Catholic, and working as a maid-of-all-work in Manhattan when the world begins to fall apart around her. The Côté family she lodged with disappears without explanation. The shelter she lived in burns down. She is not the only one caught inside this repetition. Magdalene Von Fúießsterin, sent by Zeus to find Rosemary, is fighting a war she didn’t choose so she can return to her beloved Esmerelda. Martin Marie-Pierre, known to some as Zagreus, is navigating the kidnapping of his fiancée while accepting love can exist without lust. This is the first book of a three part series structured after the Cypria, the Iliad, Aethiopis, and the Little Iliad. Rosemary is Achilles’ parallel, operating inside a story she can see the shape of but cannot stop. The gods are not alone in this warfare, as there are appearances from the Norse pantheon to Inca gods. Though the one thread that connects them all is that no one, mortal or divine, has the full picture.

Wonderful Half | Ari Ryn | Literary; Coming-of-Age (N)

Wonderful Half is a nostalgic, character-driven novel set on the outskirts of Osaka during the summer of 2000. It follows Kentaro, the son of an alcoholic mother from a low-income family, and his friendship with Naoki, who struggles with a stutter, and Akira, a mixed-race transfer student from Europe. Together, the three boys navigate a society that harshly judges anyone who deviates from the norm. The novel explores themes of grief, parental loss, self-harm, mental health, bullying, identity, and belonging, while also celebrating loyalty, understanding, and the everyday moments of friendship. As the summer unfolds, Akira gradually reveals the truth about his past and his sexuality, leaving Kentaro to decide whether their friendship will endure.

Lizzie’s Oath is a standalone historical women’s fiction novel and the second book in the Roots of Resilience series. Set in Cincinnati between 1871 and 1885, it follows Lizzie Hesch, a young woman raised in a Civil War orphan asylum who believes hard work, obedience, and sacrifice are enough to build a good life.
