Growth is not a Skillset, It's a Mindset

For the last 12 years, I’ve had the opportunity to coach thousands of people from all different backgrounds, upbringings, industries, levels of success, countries, values, dreams, and skillsets.

In the early part of my coaching career, I focused primarily on behavior modification—helping people fix business problems through better systems and processes.

And it worked.

It just wasn’t sustainable.

It didn’t matter who they were, how successful they were, how many employees they had, or what industry they were in. You could hand someone a clear 1-2-3 strategic plan—something that made the problem completely figure-out-able, even obsolete—and the same patterns would emerge.

Some would avoid it altogether, for every good and justifiable reason.

Others would do it… ish.

Only to come back with a grand explanation of why they “tried” and it didn’t work. Or it worked for a while—until they stopped doing it—and found themselves right back where they started.

Stuck.

And if I’m honest? I recognized those same patterns in my own life.

That’s when I realized something powerful: growth isn’t about skillset—even though we all think it is. Growth is a mindset.

Growth, in any area of life, isn’t solely about mastering a method or simply changing your behavior. It’s about developing your mind and aligning your heart so that what you do becomes a byproduct of who you’ve become.

Simply put: growth begins with mindset and is sustained by heartset—the internal discipline and alignment that keep you steady when results aren’t immediate. Get those right, and the steps will follow.

Now, even though I’ve already made the outline of this book crystal clear, I can still imagine a few of you thinking: “When are we going to get to the 7-step framework? The whole reason I bought this book?”

It’s an honest question.

And it reveals something fascinating about us as people.

We crave the what. The formula. The steps. The quick fix. We as humans tend to idolize skillset, don’t we?

We love mastering a method. Chasing results. Celebrating outcomes. We glorify the skillset. But very few of us slow down long enough to understand the why behind what we’re doing—or learn how to think differently about the process itself. Without understanding why—and without developing the mindset to sustain it—the what rarely sticks. That’s why so many people live behind “I don’t know.” Or keep doing the same things, expecting different results.

Part One laid the foundation. The why behind Arise and Align. You know that now—no excuses.

Now in Part Two, we focus on posture. The mindset and heartset that makes the framework sustainable. Because once you understand the why and learn how to think differently about the process, the what—the practical 7-steps—finally has something solid to stand on.

They don’t just modify your behavior. They transform you.

So we start here. We posture our mindset and heartset before we ever touch the skillset. Not because skillset doesn’t matter—but because it has its place. And when we understand what skillset truly is, we can place it in its proper order.
