Actress Hayden Panettiere was found unresponsive in a Greenville, South Carolina apartment on August 16 and pronounced dead at the scene. She was 36. Responders treated her for cardiac arrest but could not revive her. Police said there were no signs of foul play. An autopsy found no trauma. The official cause is still pending toxicology. Dispatch audio referenced a possible overdose. She played Coach Bill Yoast’s daughter in Remember the Titans. That was such a good movie..

Panettiere had been open about her long struggles with alcohol and opioid addiction, postpartum depression, and the pressures of starting in Hollywood as a child. She detailed much of it in her memoir released earlier this year. She had been through multiple rehab stints and said doctors had warned her about the health risks if she kept drinking. Her death came just days before her 37th birthday.

The Department of War formally notified 30 U.S. universities that they must immediately audit their academic, financial, and research partnerships with foreign entities of concern. That mainly means institutions in China, Russia, and Iran, plus anything tied to rebranded Confucius Institutes.

The schools have until August 31 to review the partnerships, check for exposure of sensitive or export controlled research, cut problematic ties, and report back.

If they don’t, they risk losing future federal research funding. The list includes Harvard, MIT, Georgetown, Duke, NYU, and several University of California campuses. Officials said there is zero tolerance for partnerships that compromise national security.

Maryland Democrats passed a constitutional amendment during a special session that will appear on the November ballot as Question 3. It clarifies that state rules requiring districts to be compact and contiguous only apply to state legislative maps, not congressional ones. It also lets the legislature give the state Supreme Court original jurisdiction over congressional maps.

The practical effect would be to clear the way for Democrats to redraw the congressional map and go after the state’s last Republican House seat, currently held by Rep. Andy Harris. Republicans call it a power grab aimed at creating an 8-0 Democratic delegation. They have already filed lawsuits arguing Democrats ignored the normal ballot deadlines and used a special session to force it through.

A mother and her 17 year old daughter wore XX-XY Athletics shirts supporting single-sex women’s sports to the Indiana Fever’s overtime win over the Atlanta Dream. One shirt was a Riley Gaines collaboration that said “XX” on the front and “For the Girls” on the back. They sat courtside without issue through regulation.

During overtime, league security told them the shirts were “offensive” after complaints and gave them the choice of covering up with Atlanta Dream shirts or leaving. They covered up to stay for the end of the game.

The WNBA later said fans should not have been asked to cover the shirts. The Atlanta Dream said its own staff were not involved in the decision..

The Democratic National Committee adopted a resolution at its summer meeting urging Democratic members of Congress to write legislation abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The measure calls for winding down immigration detention, restricting DHS funding unless certain enforcement activities stop, ending private detention contracts, closing facilities, and releasing most detainees.

The resolution is non binding and does not set the official party platform. It passed by voice vote as part of a larger package. Some members tried and failed to soften the language from “abolishing” to “restructuring.” Republicans immediately framed it as proof that Democrats prioritize protecting illegal immigrants over public safety.

A young actress with a long public fight against addiction is gone. The Pentagon is finally forcing big universities to account for their research ties to China, Russia, and Iran. Maryland Democrats are rewriting the rules so they can wipe out the last Republican House seat in the state. Two fans got told their “For the Girls” shirts were too offensive for a WNBA arena. And the DNC just voted to push for abolishing ICE.

I’m going to talk through these. Let’s get started!

Thirtysix years old. Found unresponsive in an apartment, possible overdose, long public history of addiction and failed attempts to stay clean. She was honest about the drinking, the opioids, the depression, and the doctors telling her it would kill her if she didn’t stop. That honesty still wasn’t enough.
