Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on August 7. An attack on one is to be treated as an attack on all. The deal also expands joint exercises, defense industry work, and strategic coordination.
It builds on an earlier Saudi-Pakistan agreement and comes after the recent conflict involving Iran and attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure. The three countries call it purely defensive and open to expansion. President Trump said he was very happy to see it and called it a big, bold, and important first step that shows the Middle East coming together so countries can better defend themselves.
President Trump directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to substantially reduce the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises with South Korea. The drills were set to start the next day. Trump said the cost is mostly borne by the United States and that the exercises send an inappropriate and hostile signal to North Korea, with which he says he has a very good relationship.
He also noted South Korea’s refusal to join U.S. efforts on the denuclearization of Iran.
The exercises could not be fully canceled because of timing, but they will be scaled back. This continues the approach Trump took in his first term after meeting with Kim Jong Un.
Jeff Kufi Asare, a 26-year-old Ghanaian national, was arrested several times in Oklahoma City over a two week span on sex crime charges. Allegations include pushing a woman against a bus stop and putting his hands down her pants, pulling down another woman’s pants from behind, grabbing a woman’s buttocks, and attempting to rape a woman on a trail. Firefighters witnessed the last incident and intervened.
He faces a first degree rape charge. Court records show at least 19 prior felony and misdemeanor charges since 2023. Reports noted his migrant status and previous releases, including one through a local diversion program. Prosecutors are seeking a higher bond.
Nearly 19 months after the Palisades Fire destroyed thousands of homes, only about 17 new homes had received certificates of occupancy by mid-August. Roughly 1,000 rebuilding permits have been issued and hundreds of homes are still under construction. Average permit times have run around 141 days in recent months.
In contrast, private developer Rick Caruso finished a more than $100 million restoration of the Palisades Village shopping center, which reopened fully leased. Coverage has pointed to bureaucracy, insurance problems, financing gaps, and city leadership under Mayor Karen Bass as reasons the residential rebuild remains so slow while the commercial project moved.
Gina LaPlaca, a former mayor and current township official in Lumberton, New Jersey, and her husband were charged with election related offenses. Prosecutors say they submitted fraudulent signatures on her nominating petition for the June Democratic primary. Multiple people listed on the petition said they never signed it or authorized anyone to do so.
Without those signatures she would not have made the ballot. She finished last in the primary. This follows her earlier conviction for driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level around 0.30 while her young child was in the car. She received a pretrial intervention program
instead of jail time.
Three Muslim majority countries just signed a mutual defense pact and Trump is fine with it. Joint drills with South Korea are getting cut back. A migrant with a long record is accused of a string of sex attacks in Oklahoma. The Palisades rebuild is still a mess while a private developer finished his project. Democrats playing a role here?
I’m going to talk through these the way I see them.
Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan putting a real mutual defense agreement on paper is notable. These are not little countries. Between Saudi money and energy, Turkey’s military and defense industry, and Pakistan’s experience plus nuclear status, they actually have complementary strengths. Trump saying he’s happy about it fits. If the region starts taking more responsibility for its own security, that reduces the automatic expectation that the United States has to show up first every time.
