I wrote this song after all the recent news regarding publishing houses blocking authors after AI suspicions on a whim. I created 2 versions of this song - this is the Male Pirate Version.
Enjoy!
[Verse 1]
They built their walls around the words
And kept the golden keys,
Said, “Wait your turn and learn the rules—
Your story belongs to me.”
But there’s a storm upon the page,
A new wind off the sea,
And every soul who dreamed in chains
Is learning to break free.
[Pre-Chorus]
So strike the drum and sound the bell,
The ink tide’s rolling in—
We’ve found another way to make
The worlds that live within.
[Chorus]
Raise the black quill, let the ink tide roll,
No house owns the fire in a storyteller’s soul.
We’ll plunder possibility and set the dreamers free—
If you can imagine it, create it fearlessly.
Heave-ho, let the old walls fall,
We’re writing our rebellion where the wild words call.
Raise the black quill—let them hear the authors sing:
You can lock away the treasure,
But imagination has no king.
[Verse 2]
We found a compass made of sparks,
A crew that never sleeps,
It charts a thousand hidden paths
Across untested seas.
But I remain the captain;
Every course and choice is mine.
The machine may raise the canvas,
But the soul between the lines is mine.
[Pre-Chorus]
We steer by human heart and hand,
Through waters strange and new.
A tool can help us build the ship—
It cannot dream for you.
[Verse 3]
They call us thieves for sailing past
The tollgates they designed,
For finding faster currents
They were certain they confined.
But we take no writer’s treasure,
Wear no other author’s name—
We’re stealing back our time
And setting worn-out rules aflame.
[Bridge]
We’ll sink the gates that barred the harbor,
Break the chains around the art.
No boardroom gets to measure
What is beating in a heart.
From every kitchen table,
Every bedroom, every den,
A fleet of fearless dreamers
Is taking up the pen.
[Breakdown — Call and Response]
Who commands the story?
**We do!**
Who decides the course?
**We do!**
Who can build a world from nothing?
**Anyone who dares!**
[Final Chorus]
Raise the black quill, let the ink tide roll,
No house owns the fire in a storyteller’s soul.
We’ll plunder possibility and set the dreamers free—
If you can imagine it, create it fearlessly.
Heave-ho, let the old walls fall,
We’re writing our rebellion where the wild words call.
Raise the black quill—let the whole wide ocean ring:
You can hoard the maps and treasure,
You can crown your paper kings—
But you’ll never chain a story,
And imagination has no king.
[Outro]
Raise the black quill…
Take your story back.
Raise the black quill…
And fly the rebel flag.
