When the future histories of modern warfare are written, August 27, 2020, may go down as one of the most important dates . That evening, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 18th Airborne Corps carried out the first strike that was selected and executed by artificial intelligence.

For a first, it wasn’t particularly impressive. The systems involved barely communicated, and it took nearly 12 hours to detect the old tank hull that had been wheeled onto a firing range. After human overseers confirmed the target, the system launched a HIMARS rocket that destroyed it.
