Happy Monday. We have two fun learning events to announce. First we will introduce you to our July guest, Aga Pokrywka. We hope you can attend the special free webinar. And please scroll to the bottom to read more about an event at the end of July, Desi Cultures, an online fermentation festival from India.
Aga Pokrywka is a multidisciplinary artist, researcher and fermentation wizardess. In her practice, she explores how microorganisms intersect with societal issues through podcasts, publications, workshops, and multimedia works. Aga is the creator of Ferment Radio, a podcast on bacterial and social fermentation, and the co-founder of Super Eclectic, a creative studio that inspires action on the most critical topics of our time. She is also a member of the Centre for the Social Study of Microbes at the University of Helsinki and a PhD candidate in the RAT Research Group at Aalto University in Finland.
Learn how to grow your own spirulina through the insights of an astronaut from an analog space mission. This process, known as phototrophic cultivation of microbes, supports wellness, daily routines, and a mindful connection across species.
Spirulina is a type of cyanobacterium, and is often described as a “superfood.”
It represents one of the oldest bacterial lineages on Earth, and is a strong candidate for space food thanks to its high protein content and relative easy cultivation.
But you don’t need to go to space to grow spirulina, and probably shouldn’t. You can cultivate it at home!
During this session, we will focus on:
🚀The fascinating history of cyanobacteria, with a focus on spirulina.
🚀What makes spirulina special, including its relevance to space mission research.
🚀Firsthand, hands-on experiences cultivating spirulina in a simulated space environment.
🚀Understanding the difference between cultivating spirulina and fermentation.
🚀A step-by-step overview of how to grow spirulina at home.
🚀Ideas to enjoy fresh spirulina as a food ingredient.
🚀How fresh spirulina differs from store-bought dried spirulina.
🚀Possibilities of post-harvest fermentation using spirulina.
📽️Sneak-peak at “Green Matter”, my upcoming film about cyanobacteria in space.
What can fermentation knowledge, practices, and innovations from the Indian subcontinent contribute to the future of food and culture globally?
Desi Cultures, an online fermentation festival-conference from India. It is a week-long program that brings together and beyond. It will take place online from Monday, 20th to Friday 24th July 2026, between 5:00 and 8:00 PM IST. Such a bargin at around 15 USDs for the entire event.
Participants can join live, or watch session recordings at their own pace, making it accessible to anyone with an interest in fermentation, from anywhere in the world.
