jessica ramírez, Allison Collins · Inside The Collective

Welcome to Inside The Collective, a newsletter that invites you into the brains, conversations and ideas of Allison Collins and jessica ramírez, friends and cofounders of The Consumer Collective. Here, we share weekly thoughts on consumer sentiment, news, retail, fashion, beauty, business, things we like, things we don’t — and why. We hope it helps you connect the dots across the consumer world.

Don’t miss our latest consumer insights report, which highlights what consumers are spending on this summer + business opportunities.
  • Plastic prices are going up, which is likely to cause more inflation for consumers.

  • There’s growing demand for vintage, mixed metal and alternative materials in the jewelry market.

  • GLP-1 proliferation appears to be benefitting styling service Stitch Fix, which is advertising that it can help people dress their changing bodies.

  • A freshly-energized Chanel under creative director Matthieu Blazy has brought in a new head for its jewelry and watch division. She previously led design at Cartier, and joins as consumers increasingly think of jewelry and watches as investments.

  • The color teal is everywhere. I’ve seen it on walls, nails, purses, clothes within the past week. Move over butter yellow?

  • Biohacking backlash: some consumers are over aggressive self optimization. I bought a (very ugly) Apple Watch during the pandemic to track steps and workouts, but as time has gone on I now only wear it during workouts. When it dies, it dies — I won’t be replacing it (with any wearable technology).

  • e.l.f. Beauty launched a hair care collection with all products priced under $10. The company now has exposure to all major beauty categories through its stable of brands.

  • Champ (which stands for Champion Athlete Managing Partner), backed by L Catterton, Patricof Co and athletes, has made a minority investment in Rhoback, a company with a large NIL-oriented apparel business.

  • KidSuper is showing his collection in Miami during the World Cup instead of in Paris.

  • Jess went to The Sports x Fashion Summit last week (hosted by Emilia Petrarca), where an important theme emerged: sports is one of the only activities where people and their raw emotions show up — and AI can’t touch it (no one wants to see robots play soccer, one panelist pointed out). See: the unbeatable and extremely human vibes in New York City after the Knicks won the championship, or the absolute bliss fans are experiencing during the World Cup.

    • Knicks championship gear became the top seller in Fanatics history, the company said, within 24 hours of the win. People in my neighborhood are still wearing blue and walking around high-fiving each other. (Allison Collins)

I recently finished a tube of Euthymol toothpaste and I loved it. It tastes amazing, sort of adjacent to wintergreen Altoids, is bright pink (joyful), and I used it until the very last drop. Disclaimer: I did receive this in PR. (Allison Collins)

The Analysis is a paid subscriber benefit. This week, we examine how a new crop of ultra-wealthy consumers are likely to shift lifestyle demands. For more consumer insights, check out our consumer insights library, here.

On Friday, SpaceX’s initial public offering valued the company at $2.1 trillion and minted as many as 4,400 millionaires, plus several billionaires. Upcoming IPOs for ChatGPT and Anthropic are also expected to create unprecedented levels of wealth, with the three IPOs together creating 20 new billionaires. This moment also marks the beginning of the trillionaire class — a level even the world’s wealthiest had yet to achieve until Elon Musk got there via SpaceX IPO. There’s of course, a chance all that wealth could go poof with market volatility, but evolving demands from the upper echelon aren’t going anywhere. Companies that can truly tailor lifestyle offerings to this group are poised to benefit.
