The Obama Presidential Center kicks off its “You Are America” summer series with a free Independence Day celebration on the John Lewis Plaza — live music by DJ Hot Rod, Mucca Pazza (a Chicago marching band that thinks it’s a rock band), and South Side vocalist Melody Angel, plus self-guided campus tours and family activities. The event marks 250 years of American progress. The center’s Chicago Public Library branch is also collecting time capsule contributions all summer at its Living Record Station, open to the public. The RSVP list is full but the campus grounds are free and open: walk in, wander, and see what’s happening.

Korean National Treasures: 2,000 Years of Art — CLOSING WEEKEND · Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S Michigan Ave
Last weekend to see this — the Art Institute’s landmark exhibition of Korean national treasures closes this week. Chicago Koreatown is organizing a group excursion on Sunday July 5 at noon, including admission, food from 82 Kimbap (kimbap, Shin Ramyun, Korean horchata), and a community picnic in Millennium Park at 1:30pm. Join them or go on your own — but go before it closes.

A major new solo exhibition at the MCA from Brazilian sculptor Kenzi Shiokava — one of the most significant gallery shows opening in Chicago this month. Shiokava’s work draws on Afro-Brazilian traditions and uses found materials — wood, fabric, shells — to create figures that are simultaneously ancestral and contemporary. Free on Tuesdays.

The historic Flat Iron Arts Building opens its studios and galleries every first Friday — live music alongside rotating art exhibits featuring both resident and guest artists. Also in the building on the same night: Phil Circle Music’s First Friday Open Mic & Jam in Studio #344, with open mic sign-up at 6pm and performances starting at 7pm. Musicians of all skill levels welcome. Free to attend, donations encouraged. The Flat Iron is one of the most important artist buildings in Chicago and this is the best night to discover it.
