Annabelle & Tom · The Anti-Inflammatory Club

We’ve been taking supplements on and off for years even though we’ve never really felt a conscious impact. At least, not a clear one, and certainly not immediately. Nor do we feel a notable difference when comparing a week where we are very much on top of taking them against the next.

Most of what these compounds are proposed to do happens on a timescale of multiple weeks and months, at a scale measured in blood markers rather than moods. Meanwhile how you feel on any given Tuesday is being pushed around by how you slept, what you ate, whether work was awful, whether it’s dark outside, and many other variables. A small shift in an inflammatory marker doesn’t stand a chance of being noticed through all that.

One of the key things Annabelle learned at nutrition school is that it’s almost always better to get what you need from food than from a capsule which is something we strive to do. But we recognise it isn’t always easy, and that’s where supplements come in for us. Our rule is roughly this: we take a small number of things where the evidence is decent, the dose is sensible, and especially where our blood tests have shown deficiencies in the first place.

Here’s what we take, and why.
