Internal discussions within the U.S. Navy regarding the under-construction aircraft carrier CVN-81 have sparked widespread controversy. Reports indicate a proposal to drop the vessel’s original name, honoring World War II hero Doris Miller, and instead name the ship after Donald Trump.
Doris Miller, a Black Navy mess attendant aboard the USS West Virginia, earned historical significance during the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Despite lacking formal training on the weapon system, Miller manned an anti-aircraft gun to fire at invading Japanese aircraft until his ammunition ran out, while also carrying his mortally wounded captain to safety. He became the first African American awarded the Navy Cross before being killed in action in 1943. His legacy was depicted in the 2001 film Pearl Harbor, and his family has long advocated for his award to be upgraded to the Medal of Honor.
