During excavations of the Indus Valley Civilization, archaeologists have discovered around 4,000–5,000 seals.
Most of these seals depict animals. But among bulls, rhinoceroses, elephants, tigers, and other creatures, one animal stands out above all the rest.
A mysterious one-horned animal appears on more than 60% of all animal seals, making it by far the most common motif in the entire civilization.
Today, archaeologists call it the “Unicorn Seal.” But was it a real animal that is now extinct? Was it simply a stylized bull? Or did it represent a sacred symbol, a merchant’s emblem, or a deeper meaning that has been lost for over 4,000 years?
At first glance, the animal on the seal looks like a humped bull, which is why many archaeologists believe the Indus “unicorn” is simply a stylized bull shown with a single horn. However, this theory is not conclusive.
Other Indus seals clearly depict bulls with two horns and rhinoceroses with their distinct features, showing that Indus artists were fully capable of representing animals accurately. If so, why did they repeatedly carve this particular animal with only one horn?
Several theories have been proposed. The most widely accepted is that it was a symbolic or artistic version of a bull. Others suggest it may have been a mythical creature, a merchant’s emblem, a clan symbol, or a sacred icon. Some have even proposed it was an extinct animal, although there is currently no evidence to support that idea. Likewise, there is no direct evidence linking the unicorn to Vedic stories or rituals.
Adding to the mystery, the animal is almost always shown facing a strange object on a stand, believed to be a ritual stand, offering table, or feeding trough—but its purpose remains unknown.
The biggest challenge is that the Indus script has not yet been deciphered. Until it is, we cannot know what the unicorn represented or what the inscriptions on these seals actually mean. For now, the Unicorn Seal remains one of the greatest mysteries of the Indus Valley Civilization.
