August 10, 2026. I visited Calvary Cemetery in Queens to honor the Civil War dead and reflect on the enduring fight to save American democracy from those determined to destroy it.
First, we visit the Civil War monument—a solemn reminder of the Americans who died fighting to preserve the Union and defeat the slaveholders’ rebellion.
Their sacrifice reminds us that the threat of conservative betrayal from within is not new. From Fort Sumter to January 6th, right-wing extremists have tried to divide Americans, strip away rights, and destroy democracy.
Then we visit the memorial to New York’s Fighting 69th Regiment, the legendary Irish immigrant regiment whose soldiers fought in every Civil War battle to preserve the Union. Their story is a powerful rebuke to Traitor Trump’s politics of scapegoating and hostility toward immigrants.
Immigrants have always fought, worked, organized, and sacrificed to build this country — and they helped save it in its hour of greatest danger.
We also explore one of Calvary’s oldest sections, including the Alsop family plot, before the livestream is interrupted by buffering.
The Civil War dead call on us to recognize Trump’s MAGA bowel movement for what it is— a white supremacist authoritarian attempt to destroy the democratic system that so many actual patriots made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve.
