It seems like yesterday that media members were posting videos of Bo Bichette flubbing ground balls at third base during spring training. One of the question marks coming into the season for the Mets was whether their big free-agent signing could handle a position switch after spending his career at shortstop. Although the bat has been less than advertised, Bichette has actually handled the hot corner well and may have found his permanent home.
Going into tonight’s action, Baseball Savant grades him +2 in fielding run value, with his range grading out well with both Savant (+2) and Fangraphs (+3). He still has a -3 Defensive Runs Saved, but overall Bichette has handled the position well. To put it in perspective, Eduardo Escobar, who manned third for the 101-win Buck Showalter team in 2022, was a -11 OAA. A more recent comp, Bichette has been just about as good as Brett Baty and, despite his offensive struggles, has more upside with the bat.
