Greetings, friends and family!
In this first edition of my monthly newsletter, I’d like to provide an overview of what I got up to during the month of January 2025. The year has been off to a remarkable start, to say the least.
Before launching into my agenda recollection, I want to tell you about a new practice I have been taking quite seriously.
No videos.
Okay, that’s a bit extreme, and I make exceptions for certain kinds of videos, like films (1-2 per month maximum; I watched The Notebook for the first time yesterday and loved it), live music sets, an occasional music video, and videos I myself have made or am working on. Beyond that, I am watching no videos. I am not watching TikTok (I’ve never had an account or used the app), I’m not watching Instagram Reels (at multiple points in my life, I have been deeply addicted to this evil substance), and I’m not watching YouTube. How am I spending my time, then, you may be wondering? I’m working at my job, reading, writing, rock climbing, studying Scripture, doing yoga and meditating, socializing, going to church, cooking, cleaning, practicing my instruments, listening to music, travelling – many, many things. I frankly have discovered that I have no time for videos.
This new self-imposed rule has had a profound impact on me. My mental and spiritual clarity have noticeably improved since beginning this undertaking at the beginning of the year. I think much of the video content produced today is actually designed to overwhelm one’s thoughts and establish a stranglehold on their soul. I’m not certain about the specific mechanics of this, but it’s something I’ve observed over my many years of over-consuming Internet and video content.
