Did you know that the City of Vancouver is projecting half a meter of sea level rise by 2050? With so much of Metro Vancouver at or close to sea level, we’re going to see a huge impact on the unceded territories where we live.
Sometimes it’s hard to picture such a dramatic change in our communities. Enter, Sea Level Rides! A self-propelled exploration of places threated by climate change and the creative solutions being used save them. This ride is for the urban planning enthusiasts, the bike commuters, the weekend warriors, and the climate curious.
Join Paige and Erica from the sword fern collective this Sunday, July 6 at 12pm for a group bike ride through Richmond, starting and ending at Bridgeport Skytrain Station. We'll explore areas vulnerable to sea level rise, deepen our connection to the lands and waters that shape our lives, and explore some of the city's best bike paths like the Richmond Dyke, Steveston, and an (optional) extension down the Iona Jetty.
This ride is open to everyone, and will include a cruise along a 50km loop, starting and ending at Bridgeport Station. For riders who want a little extra distance, there will be an optional extension down the Iona Jetty at the end of the ride. The terrain is mostly hard packed gravel. This ride is suitable for all bikes, but please make sure you are prepared to spend several hours on your bike. Road bikes with narrower tires might find the gravel challenging. E-bikes are welcome! We will have one person leading this ride and one person sweeping at the back.
Pack snacks, water, and a basic repair kit (tubes/sealant, pump, and patches).
We can’t wait to see you on Sunday, register here!
