Pittsburgh Wetland Delineation Training — October 19–22, 2026 | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Area

If wetland delineation is part of your professional responsibilities, you need more than a certificate. You need the field skills, technical judgment, and documentation practices required to make sound wetland calls and support your findings with confidence.

The Swamp School’s Foundational Wetland Delineation™ (FWD™) training is coming to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area October 19–22, 2026.

This four-day, field-focused program is designed for environmental scientists, engineers, consultants, land managers, recent graduates, and other professionals who need practical experience applying federal wetland delineation methods in real-world settings.

Participants will work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual (1987) and applicable Regional Supplements while learning how to:

  • Identify and document hydrophytic vegetation

  • Recognize hydric soil indicators

  • Evaluate wetland hydrology

  • Map plant communities and collect defensible field data

  • Address atypical and challenging site conditions

  • Mark wetland boundaries in the field

  • Prepare clear, professional, review-ready documentation

  • Use onsite and offsite information to support wetland determinations

The focus is not simply on learning the terminology. FWD™ is designed to help participants build the practical judgment needed to make more confident, consistent, and defensible wetland delineation decisions.

Wetland delineation decisions can influence permitting, project schedules, land-use planning, infrastructure development, engineering design, and client outcomes.

That is why this course combines classroom instruction with hands-on field application.

Participants learn how the methods described in federal wetland guidance are actually applied under real field conditions—where vegetation, soils, hydrology, landscape position, and site history do not always present a simple answer.

Participants receive:

  • 36 Professional Development Hours (PDHs)

  • PlantList Pro

  • A Swamp Field Kit

  • Classroom and field instruction

  • A shareable verification badge

  • A 12-month personal access license to course materials

The included Swamp Field Kit provides practical resources for fieldwork, including a plant densitometer, field notebook, soil guides, data sheets, carrying case, and additional field tools.

The program has also been approved for continuing education credit by the Society of Wetland Scientists Professional Certification Program (SWSPCP) and the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER).

This training is especially useful for:

  • Environmental consultants

  • Wetland scientists

  • Environmental scientists

  • Engineers

  • Natural resource professionals

  • Facility and land managers

  • Recent graduates entering environmental consulting

  • Professionals supporting permitting and regulatory compliance

  • Anyone whose projects depend on accurate wetland boundary identification

Whether you are beginning your wetland career or looking to strengthen your field skills, FWD™ provides a practical technical foundation you can apply immediately.

Foundational Wetland Delineation™ is also the first step in the Swamp School’s Aquatic Delineation Training & Certification Pathway.

Professionals who want to continue developing their skills can advance to the Certified Wetland Delineator (CWD™) credential and ultimately the advanced Federal Aquatic Delineator Professional (FADP™) credential.

Dates: October 19–22, 2026
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area
Format: In-person classroom and field training
