When I was a young mother, in my forties with three kids - 12, 8, and 4 years of age - I yelled too much. I brought home so much stress from overwork at my NICU job and I did not then know how to deal with it.
I felt constantly overwhelmed, and tired, and grouchy, so I yelled at my children too much! I had no knowledge of all the (modern day) techniques to calm myself.
I had been raised in a family who yelled, well, my father at least. (Mother usually stayed quiet.)
When you grow up with yelling in your household - yelling, screaming, shouting, whatever - it just comes naturally. But that is not good, or normal, and it programs your brain to think that yelling is natural.
It’s not natural to scream at the children you love when YOU are the one who is stressed and overwhelmed. Plus, it makes you feel so ashamed and guilty.
After I retired, I did research on this topic and wrote a book to hopefully help other parents caught in this shame-filled trap of yelling.
We promise ourselves we will not yell at them, but then we lose it and scream at them again. That yelling hurts them, and shames us. It’s a vicious cycle for those of us raised with yelling.
My book, Stop Yelling and Start Connecting, is available for a FREE Kindle download on Thursday July16. If you don’t own a Kindle, you can get the free Kindle app on your iPad or computer and grab it there.

This little book explains why we yell, and clearly describes various ways for us to stop yelling at our kids. Mostly, it describes ways for us to pause, calm down, and stop screaming.
Moreover, it explains why repair after yelling is so important, and tells you how to do that.
I hope you will grab a FREE copy and enjoy reading my stories.
Please do not suffer in shame any longer. You can do better with your children.
Sincerely, Susan
