40 states, cities, towns and tribes across the country are suing big oil for climate damage, arguing that taxpayers should not have to pay for damage they did not cause.
In addition, Maine and several other states have introduced legislation to create Climate Superfunds. Oil companies would pay into the funds to cover the costs of fixing climate damage and building climate resistant infrastructure. New York and Vermont have passed Climate Superfund bills, about a dozen other states including Maine are considering them.
In response, Big Oil and the Trump administration are doing everything they can to prevent polluters from having to pay for the damage they cause, despite billions in windfall profits due to the war with Iran.
Republicans in Congress have introduced a bill (the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act HR 8330 and S 4340) to make polluters immune from lawsuits. We can’t let this bill pass!
Oil companies are suing New York and Vermont for their climate superfund laws. The Trump administration is supporting their lawsuits.
A coalition of Maine environmental groups have initiated a campaign to keep big oil accountable. Maine’s Climate Superfund bill (LD 1870) was held over and will be reconsidered by the legislature in the session beginning in January.
