Summer dressing is supposed to be easy.

And yet, somehow, a pair of tailored shorts can still send us into a minor identity crisis at 8:14 in the morning.

Is this coastal? Is this city? Why did the same coral top look perfect yesterday and strangely loud today? Does this skirt need a tiny tank, a linen shirt or a completely different life?

So I made three charts to remove some of the drama.

Before choosing individual pieces, decide what kind of outfit you are actually trying to make.

Coastal clean needs light fabrics, airy shapes and natural textures. City chic wants sharper tailoring and a little more structure. Vacation-ready can handle color and movement. Off-duty works best with relaxed basics, while soft feminine leans into fluid skirts and delicate details. Sunset nights call for richer shades and a cleaner, slightly dressier line.

The important part is that each mood has its own visual language.

A linen shirt and tailored shorts say something very different from a draped top and dark mini skirt, even when both outfits are technically “summer clothes.”

Choose the mood first. The pieces become much easier after that.
