This summer has gotten off to a slower start than usual. In many ways, that’s been lovely. In other ways, it’s been surprisingly difficult.
I am the type of person who likes to be connected, to feel like things are moving forward, and to be in motion. I like projects. I like momentum. I like having plans on the calendar. So “slow” doesn’t always come naturally to me.
But at almost five weeks postpartum, I’m reminding myself that slow is exactly what is needed right now. Not just for me, but for our family as we adjust to having a new member in the household. We’ve been trying to keep life as simple as possible and, as much as I resist it sometimes, I’ve found that easy and slow have actually made this transition feel much more manageable.
Every year when the weather warms up, I find myself craving the summers of my childhood and teenage years. Long afternoons at the pool. Time with friends. Letting my hair air dry. Wearing light fabrics that feel effortless. Traveling somewhere exciting. Approaching each day with a sense of freedom and possibility.
Some of those things are a reality this summer and some aren’t. We won’t be traveling to Europe until the fall, and I would be lying if I said it was easy to scroll through an algorithm full of people looking impossibly chic on the Mediterranean while I’m spending most of my time at home with a newborn.
But what I’ve come to believe is that summer is more of a mindset than a destination.
It’s less about where you are and more about how you move through the season. It’s permission to be a little less structured, a little less productive, and a little more present. And for me, that’s an important reminder right now. This is not the season to push harder, launch something new every week, or make big life decisions. Adding a baby to our family is enough. This season is asking me to slow down, enjoy where I am, and let things unfold.
As my body slowly transitions back toward feeling like my own again, I’ve started thinking about a few pieces I’d like to add to my wardrobe. Everything I have my eye on feels effortless, easy to wear, and well suited for summer travel whenever that next trip arrives.
