1988 was the year I showed up on the planet, and looking back, it is wild how many movies from that year still hit for me. I have always been a cinephile, but several films released in my birth year have a special place in my heart. A few you may recognize from some of my other lists.
This isn’t some definitive “greatest films of the year” ranking or anything official. These are the ones that stuck with me the most and still make me nostalgic whenever I revisit them.
Here are my top 10 personal favorite films from 1988:
Braddock: Missing In Action III
I make no secret of my love for all things Chuck Norris cinema. While not as classic as the first film in the franchise, this one is a nice conclusion to the trilogy.
Big
Penny Marshall directed this comedy about a young boy who wishes to become an adult. He grows up to be an adult, portrayed by Tom Hanks.
Bloodsport
Jean-Claude Van Damme portrays an American soldier who enters a deadly underground Martial Arts tournament. It has some dynamite fight scenes that still hold up.
My Neighbor Totoro
In this charming anime, two sisters discover a mystical creature living in the woods near their home. This is one of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s best movies.
Rambo III
Vietnam vet John Rambo, played by Sylvester Stallone, is called to action once again to save his commanding officer from the Soviets.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
In a world where toons exist, Roger Rabbit thinks his wife Jessica is cheating on him. Roger is framed for murder, turning to private detective Eddie Valiant for help. It is one of two films where Disney and Warner Bros. characters exist together.
Die Hard
Bruce Willis stars in one of the greatest action films and Christmas movies of all time.
The Land Before Time
Watch the journey of tiny dinosaurs making their way home while dodging predators. This is one of iconic animator Don Bluth’s greatest achievements.
Oliver & Company
Disney brings us the story of Oliver, a homeless kitten who gets adopted by a pack of dogs, led by Dodger. They teach him about living on the streets of New York City.
Hero And The Terror
Chuck Norris stars as an LA cop who must stop an escaped serial killer called the Terror.
