A strategist (for that matter, anyone) will always have more failures than successes. It is just how probability works. At least for those who try. If you don’t play the game, it’s another thing altogether.
My suggestion, have a running “Failure dashboard”. It does not need to be complex. I share a suggestion below.
When it comes to strategy, all corporate strategy teams and all partners in consulting firms should maintain such a dashboard for themselves. The idea is to keep a running tab of which projects got truly implemented and which ones delivered. If they did not work, a broad understanding of why. In case they worked, wonderful! Keep learning from that as well.
I am calling this “Failure dashboard”, as the number of failures should be more than successes, that is if you are doing strategy right (leading with experiments).
Too many strategy teams never showcase their failures. Actually very few even admit them. I think failures should be worn as a badge of honour. Maybe the dashboard should be called - The Honours dashboard!
