Strategy Learning 103 : Videos Only

Hi,

This is our third post in the strategy learning series and this one is all about videos.

A lot of us now prefer to watch videos rather than reading an article or book. I have tried to put down some of my favourite videos to watch on the topic of business and strategy in no particular order below. I have written a short note on what to expect from the video. I hope this helps you in your strategy learning journey.

Remember, one thing that is central to any good strategy is choice and risk to create customer value. Enjoy.

1. Aswath Damondaran on Corporate LifeCycle. (~30 mins)

   The title of this video is a bit misleading. This is more about how just like humans companies age and go through a corporate lifecycle. I think this is a very interesting concept that every strategist should try to understand. Companies age and die. Sometimes they come across a miracle drug and extend their life but miracles are rare.

2. Clayton Christen and Jobs to be done (~5 mins)

   In this video Clay explains the idea of jobs to be done. Customers employ products and services to do certain jobs. Understanding what that job is, is key to unlocking more customer value. A very simple yet powerful concept

2. Former Nokia CEO on the downfall of Nokia (~10 mins)

   In this very open interview Olli-Pekka talks about his time at Nokia which saw Nokia lose its dominance in the mobile phone market and be taken over by Apple and Samsung. It is a good insight into how leadership views such problems. I am not saying that we fully agree with this perspective but it is important to know this side of the story.

4. Roger Martin on brand loyalty (~2 mins)

   This is a not so well known video of Roger Martin in which he talks about customer loyalty and the role sub conscious has to play in it. He explains it via the concept of “cumulative advantage.”
