My friend Dave is a man of immense discipline, applying it religiously to his coffee routine. As an admitted coffee snob, I find his approach fascinating.

We were talking the other day, and Dave described how he prepares his daily pour-over: He uses a $400 burr grinder for perfect particle uniformity, heats charcoal-filtered water precisely to 200°F, and executes a meticulous, timed brew. Dave lit up as he detailed patiently blooming the grounds, then pouring water in concentric circles over the coffee with precision, all to ensure an even extraction.

The epitome of process control.

And the result? A mediocre cuppa joe.

Why? Well, that’s what’s interesting.

Dave engages in this elaborate ritual, approaching the brewing process like some kind of mad laboratory scientist. And don’t get me wrong – I admire that. I’m even a bit jealous.

The kicker, I come to find out, is that he uses these bland, generic coffee beans. Yea…
