Steve McAlphabet · Rhyme and Reason

The two worst things about what I do as a custom, pay-what-you-want typewriter poet are not having anyone who wants a poem and having someone want a poem and not return for it. The first is most definitely worse. I mean, if I write a poem that no one comes back for, I still have a poem, whereas if nobody asks for a poem, I might not write any at all.

I realize some typewriter poets do it on the spot, either being true wizards of rhyme or excellent at stream of consciousness poetry. I like to take a little time when I’m writing a poem, usually about ten minutes, and I prefer to be paid after they read it because I know I’ll be more likely to make more. So it’s not like I can take a deposit or anything, but I do get their phone numbers and text them when I’m done.

Unfortunately, sometimes I just get ghosted. Such was the case in Colorado Springs. I was set up in the morning on the edge of Acacia Park when a couple celebrating some momentous occasion approached to ask for a poem, and then they never came back for it or responded to my texts.

In all fairness, there is the possibility that I put in their number wrong. Nevertheless, it sounded as if they’d had a pretty nice adventure so far, and their hope was to memorialize that. While I have historically travelled alone, I’d love to find someone to travel with one of these days.

ADVENTURE TOGETHER

There is something to be said

for having an adventure

and plenty more to add

about doing it together

getting outside of your comfort zone

and going to new places

opens you to the world

and an array of different faces

things outside your neighborhood

aren’t the way you’re used to

but you can open your mind

if you are brave enough to choose to

we’ve found gratitude in travel

and finding a beautiful town

a place we will revisit

when we come back around

you’ve got to get a nature fix

if life is starting to unravel

for gaining a new outlook on life

there’s nothing better than travel
