You’ve heard me talk about the 30-Second Brand Story. Now let’s actually build yours. Over the next three posts, we’re going to break it down piece by piece until you have one that works. Here’s what actually happens when you answer “What do you do?” the way most business owners do.
The other person hears your job title, sorts you into a mental category, and starts looking for the exit. Not because they’re rude. Because nothing you said gave them a reason to keep listening.
In networking rooms and sales conversations, the owners who command attention aren’t the ones with the most impressive credentials. They’re the ones who make the other person think, *”Yes — that’s exactly the problem I’m dealing with.”*
That’s the shift everything depends on: from description to recognition.
When you lead with your services, the listener sorts and files you into a category they think you fit into. And usually, that’s not the category that describes you at all. When you lead with a problem — specifically, *the* problem your ideal customer loses sleep over — something different happens. Their brain stops filing and starts searching. *Is this my problem? Do I know someone with this problem?*
That search is called attention. Real attention. Not polite nodding.
Most business owners have spent years perfecting their service description. They can tell you exactly what they do, how they do it, and why they’re qualified. But they’ve never stopped to ask the harder question: *Does any of this make the right person pay attention?*
If your current introduction is a description of your process or a list of your services, it’s working against you. Not because it’s wrong. Because it’s forgettable.
The good news: the fix doesn’t require reinventing your business. It requires understanding whose problem you actually solve — and learning to say it out loud in a way that creates recognition.
That’s what the 30-Second Brand Story is built to do.
