Living Art and Teamwork

When watching a theatrical performance, it is easy to think of the stage as the final outcome of an artistic idea. In reality, a complex production is a living system: people work simultaneously on timing, languages, practical problems, sudden intuitions, and tiny details that must fit together perfectly.

Theatre is never the product of a single talent. It is a process of continuous construction, where every department alters and influences the work of the others. A directing choice changes the lighting design. A stage movement forces the sound to be reconsidered. A costume transforms an actor’s posture. Every element creates consequences.

In theatre, the word teamwork stops being an abstract concept and takes the shape of collective intelligence.

Preparing a highly complex production certainly requires technical skills, but above all it demands the ability to coordinate very different kinds of energy. One must know how to manage artistic visions, production schedules, human fragilities, exhaustion, changes of direction, and sudden emergencies. No one works in isolation: everything depends on the quality of the connections. And then there is the intense work of mediating, listening, and holding the group together when the pressure increases.

What the audience perceives as fluidity is almost always born from a long series of attempts, corrections, mistakes, adaptations, and an ongoing negotiation between control and unpredictability.

Theatre places at the center something that today seems increasingly rare: the ability to create together without erasing each individual’s uniqueness. Perhaps this is also why theatre remains one of the most profoundly human and irreplaceable artistic experiences.

And when that balance succeeds, the stage creates something that no one, alone, could ever have achieved.

Last week one of my poems was among the winners of a prize organized by Accademia Mondiale della Poesia/World Poetry Organization, a poetry organization based in Verona which includes among its founders three Nobel prizes for literature.
