Dear Readers,

Read in Italian/Leggi in italiano

This week, the Italian edition of Digital Citizenship: Language, Ethics and Identity in Cyberspace arrives in bookstores

Digital Citizenship

The Italian title of the book is: I mattoni della nuova babele: Identità, Linguaggio ed Etica della Cittadinanza Digitale (The Bricks of the New Babel: Identity, Language and Ethics of Digital Citizenship) and it is published by Infinito Edizioni (a publisher well known for its human rights interest) in its iSaggi series,

The book was born from a question I have been asking myself for a long time, ever since I wrote the essay The Principle of Relevance in 2010 - at a time when it was far ahead of its time: Where do we really live our lives?

We still tend to think of the digital world as a tool that we use to work, gather information, or communicate. But perhaps that definition is no longer sufficient. A significant part of our daily experience now takes place in a dimension that is not simply technological; it is relational, psychological, and cultural.

In the book, I propose looking at cyberspace as a digital field - a collective space in which identities, forms of belonging, conflicts, and ways of interpreting reality are shaped.

This is also where the metaphor of the new Babel in the title of the Italian edition comes from.

Contemporary Babel is not built of stone, but of data, connections, platforms, and languages. It is a place where billions of people communicate simultaneously, yet do not always succeed in understanding one another. The risk is not a lack of words, but rather their impoverishment.

For this reason, a few months ago, together with my publisher, we chose the title The Bricks of the New Babel. Every message, every comment, every communicative choice contributes to building the shared space of digital citizenship. Every day, we add another brick to this collective architecture.

One of the book’s central themes is precisely digital citizenship - not as a legal concept or a technical skill, but as a responsibility.

Being a digital citizen does not simply mean knowing how to use online tools. It means reflecting on the quality of the relationships we build, the language we use, and the impact of our actions within a shared space.

We live in a time when artificial intelligence and algorithms are transforming our relationship with knowledge, information, and one another.

In the face of these changes, I believe it is important to keep one fundamental question at the center of our attention:

What vision of humanity do we want to bring into the future we are building?
