As 2024 unfolds, you may find yourself reassessing the list of resolutions that you ambitiously set for the year. It's not uncommon to stumble or falter with some of these early commitments. However, this moment of realisation offers a unique opportunity to refocus your energy on perhaps the most transformative resolution of all: cultivating self-love. After immersing myself in Louise L. Hay’s book "Mirror Work," I’ve been inspired to share why this singular resolution could be more impactful than any other.

In a world where we often measure success by external achievements, choosing self-love as your guiding resolution for 2024 is a profound shift. It is not only about nurturing positive feelings towards yourself; it is also about embracing a journey towards internal happiness and peace. When you decide to strengthen love and kindness towards yourself, you will also have a positive impact on everyone around you because who is treat yourself is how you treat others.

So, let's have a closer look at why self-love is perhaps the most impactful resolution of all.

Self-love is often misconstrued as a selfish or narcissistic trait. However, it is quite the opposite. Self-love is the foundation upon which our ability to love and care for others is built. It is about recognising and valuing your worth. It involves treating yourself with kindness, forgiveness, and compassion.

“You’ve been criticising yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.” Louise L. Hay

Self-love offers numerous benefits. Here are some of the biggest ones.

  1. Improved mental health. Self-love can enhance your mental well-being. When you love and accept yourself, you are less likely to suffer from conditions like depression and anxiety.

  2. Better relationship with your body. Once you start to nourish self-love, you will start to treat your body with greater care, understanding and respect. For example, it will become easier to choose healthy food and exercise more. You will learn to listen to your body and respect its needs and wishes.

  3. Healthy relationships. Loving yourself sets the standard for how others should treat you. Healthy self-love leads to healthier, more fulfilling relationships with others. Once you start to treat yourself with kindness and respect, you will also treat others in the same way.

  4. Greater life satisfaction. Self-love is a key component of living a fulfilling life. It empowers you to pursue your passions, dreams, and desires without self-doubt holding you back.

  5. Improved self-confidence. When you love and accept yourself, your confidence soars. You believe in your abilities and you are willing to leave your comfort zone to pursue your dreams. This attitude can lead you to great success in your professional and personal life.

  6. Enhanced self-esteem. Self-love fosters a stronger sense of self-worth and confidence. When you value yourself and your abilities, you're more inclined to pursue challenges and opportunities, believing in your capacity to succeed. This heightened self-esteem can lead to better performance in various aspects of life, including work and personal relationships.

  7. Improved decision-making. Loving yourself means trusting your intuition and instincts. This newfound trust can help you make decisions faster and with greater confidence.

  8. Better stress management. Loving yourself equips you with the resilience to cope more effectively with stress. It involves nurturing a compassionate inner dialogue, which can help in viewing stressful situations more constructively and finding healthier ways to cope, rather than resorting to self-criticism or negative coping mechanisms.

  9. Increased creativity. Self-love nurtures creativity by providing the psychological safety needed to explore and express unique ideas. It reduces the fear of judgement or failure, allowing for a freer flow of creative energy and innovation.

  10. Deeper self-awareness. Finally, self-love enhances self-awareness, encouraging individuals to reflect on their true feelings, desires, and aspirations. This introspection can lead to more mindful and intentional choices, steering life in a more authentic and fulfilling direction.

In the “Mirror Work” book, Louise invites her readers to participate in a three-week course towards more self-love. There are a lot of exercises that Louise shares but the one that is constant is the one where you stand in front of a mirror, look into your eyes and tell yourself that you love yourself. If “I love you” feels like to much for the first days, you can start with “I like you”. Make it your habit that every time you pass a mirror, you will say this sentence to yourself. Gradually you can also add other nice things to say to yourself. You might be surprised how quickly the relationship that you have with yourself will start to change for the better.

There are a lot of other practices that you can include into your daily life to progress on the journey towards more self-love. But if you are looking for the first step, the mirror work might be a good step to take.

Lastly, I would like to share with you a reminder that the journey towards self-love is not straightforward. Some days might feel like you take a step forward and then two steps back. Therefore it is good to review your progress not on a daily basis but on monthly or perhaps even quarterly. It will be easier then to look at yourself with more kindness and notice that you are moving forward. And if you are truly not moving forward it might be worth asking a question about what stops you from loving yourself more. But that is probably a topic for another article.

I wish you all the best on this journey towards more self-love. And if you like guided meditations, please feel free to check out guided meditations on my YouTube channel. Perhaps my voice will turn out to be a good companion for this inner journey. That would be my honour.
