Próximo Día Vs. Día Siguiente

En este artículo vamos a corregir un error re común que te va a ayudar a sonar bastante mejor cuando hables en español.

In this article, we’re going to correct a really common mistake that will help you sound a lot better when you speak Spanish.

Es común que, al contar una anécdota en pasado, los estudiantes de español de repente digan algo como: “Corrí la maratón de Buenos Aires. El próximo día me desperté y me dolía todo”.

It’s common for Spanish students, when telling an anecdote in the past, to suddenly say something like: “I ran the Buenos Aires Marathon. The next day I woke up and my whole body hurt.”

Sin embargo, aunque no sea gramaticalmente incorrecto, no usamos “próximo” para hablar de algo que pasó en el pasado, sino en el futuro.

However, although it’s not grammatically incorrect, we don’t use “próximo” to talk about something that happened in the past; we use it for the future.

“El próximo año voy a estudiar en la Universidad de Córdoba”. (Next year, I’m going to study at the University of Córdoba.)

“La próxima vez te presento a mis padres”. (Next time, I’ll introduce you to my parents.)

🤓 Para hablar del pasado usamos la siguiente estructura:

To talk about the past, we use the following structure:

A + artículo + sustantivo de tiempo (día, semana, mes, año) + siguiente

Entonces: “Corrí la maratón de Buenos Aires. Al día siguiente me desperté y me dolía todo”. (I ran the Buenos Aires Marathon. The next day, I woke up and my whole body hurt.)

“Llegué muy tarde a casa y a la mañana siguiente no me podía despertar. Falté al trabajo.” (I got home very late, and the next morning I couldn’t wake up. I missed work.)

Algo muy fácil de corregir y que cambia mucho la manera en la que te escuchan los nativos.

Ahora contame una historia usando estas expresiones:
