Yosef - From Within · Speaking From Within

When the sun sets in the Jewish calendar tonight, it will be one year. One year since your last smoked salmon sandwich. One year since you sipped a scotch, since we heard your laughter, since we heard you complain.

Your flat stands empty, a precious time capsule for now, a tribute to the hundreds, if not thousands of people that came through your doors for the happiest, and saddest, days of their lives. No matter the occasion, no matter the need, the door was always open, often literally, for the entire community to feel at ease.

The views of Sussex, breathtaking as always, once the cornerstone of our family gatherings, locked in our core memories, will soon be turned over to a new family to share; for a new family to call that magical home their own.

Always a trend-setter, a lot of special people joined you this year. A lot of sadness. A lot to remember. You outlived most of your generation and your memory lives strong. Your entrepreneurial spirit and can-do mindset has been inherited by your great-grandchildren. Your knack for turning any Tuesday into a dinner party for dozens continues in my home.

One year since your heart stopped and your soul returned to so many people you adored, and who adored you too; childhood friends, parents, and partners. For all the joy you shared with those around you, you were no stranger to the pain of loss.

At your stone setting I shared a thought from Pirkei Avot — במקום שאין אנשים, השתדל להיות איש - In a place where there are no people, strive to be that person. You never had to strive to fill a room, you never had to work hard to set an example, it all came naturally to you, and you didn’t waste a moment being that person. And just like the stone we set above your grave, the stone I remember you writing yourself when I was in single digits - your memory is a permanent fixture in our lives.

You always loved a celebration so perhaps it’s fitting that your first Yahrzeit coincides with New Year’s Eve. So whatever it’s like up there, and whoever you are with, know how much we miss you, and wish you were here.
