In this guide, I’m going to explain why scolding is hot. I will correct a common misunderstanding, that scolding is about being mean, and explain why it’s really about taking control, and playfully giving it up too.
I shall teach you not just how to scold, but how to respond to it properly too, so you can incorporate it into your own kinky roleplaying, regardless of whether you’re a dom or a sub. If you write your own erotic stories, this guide will help with scene-building and dialogue too, and even if you don’t, once you understand the essence of scolding, you’ll be able to add heat and flavour to your own favourite fantasies with this potent erotic spice.
Think of scolding as foreplay for spankos.
Scolding is a kind of verbal scene-building that exemplifies the fundamental principle of improvisation: show, don’t tell. So rather than stating: “I’m going to spank you now”, we establish the setting with our words, and permit the erotic tension to build. This matters, a spanking without a pretense feels arbitrary and unsatisfying, as our imaginations work best when things happen for a reason.
Hence what we call a scolding is only a pretend telling-off, it’s really the stage directions for a shared kinky scene. Crucially, the point of scolding is not to belittle the recipient - although that might happen anyway - but to allow one participant to exert control, and their partner to express their acceptance.
Kinky scenes can only be developed when we talk to each other, and so scolding is actually a dialogue that allows us to set the mood of the scene, without breaking character. The words we choose and the way we speak them might express disappointment or anger, but they could equally well tease or seduce.
Think of scolding as a spell that allows us to step from our familiar everyday identity and through the magic mirror into a play world of strictness and discipline. Erotic words are a powerful magic, and once we know how the spell works, the better we’re able to cast it.
What characters are you both inhabiting? What are their moods and personalities? Why is the prospect of punishment hanging in the air? What snare of words will entrap our partner’s imagination? And what can we do to ratchet up the sexual tension?
For many, scolding is synonymous with humiliation, but I hope these questions encourage you to think of all the other ways you could play out a scolding scene. You don’t even need to raise your voice. The right choice of words is enough to make the one being scolded feel like their wrist has already been grasped and their fate is inevitable. The first smack of a good spanking should be delivered through a scolding that tingles between the ears.
Hence the best way to think of scolding is not as a one-way lecture, but as an improvised scene between two active participants. Even if the dominant partner does most of the talking, whoever is playing the submissive in the scene has the vital responsibility of keeping the scene flowing, even if it’s through non-verbal acknowledgements, and doing what they’re told. So let’s explore how the dom can set the scene, and then how their partner can respond to it.
… 1 …
If you’ve ever tried improv, you’ll know the scene can only advance through words. It involves an ebb and flow, where one partner offers, and the other accepts, and offers something in return to keep the scene flowing. The worst sin in improv is to block - that is, to say something that kills the energy of the interaction.
The other golden rule of improvisation is Don’t Be Boring. So when scene-building, you should always try to add something interesting, so you give your partner something to work with. Scenes are most satisfying then they feel like they’re always moving forward, it’s no fun if the dialogue gets stuck in bickering.
If possible, it’s better to show rather than tell. In a kinky setting, for instance, rather than telling your partner they’re naughty, talk about what they’ve done that’s been so naughty. See how that gives your partner something to deny, or smirk about, or boast about other misdemeanours that haven’t even been discovered yet.
It’s helpful if both participants are aware of the basic direction of the scene, even if what they actually say is improvised in the moment. So next I’m going to describe the 8 Stages of an Erotic Scolding scene. This allows both dom and sub to align their expectations, since if you both know how the scene will unfold, you’ll understand what stage your partner expects you to move to next, which in turn helps you both decide when it’s appropriate to protest or argue.
This is the “platform” in improv terms, where the participants establish the setting.
This might be a few back and forths, perhaps even initially light and innocent, but then introducing the first hints of tension, a sense that something is wrong. It’s not just the dom doing the talking, with the sub listening passively, both should contribute.
Example dialogue: “I can’t believe I’ve come home to find you lounging about, with your chores still not done...”
This is the moment the dom explicitly calls out their partner’s misbehaviour.
At this point the tone irreversibly shifts from neutral to serious, and the sub must choose how they’ll respond, will they admit their guilt immediately, or attempt to contest it?
Example dialogue: “I can’t believe you were watching such filth!”
This is where the tension of the scene ramps up as the interrogation advances towards the inevitable.
The dominant character takes charge and asks pointed questions in order to make their partner admit their guilt in their own words.
Example dialogue: “Don’t lie to me, you know what happens to those who fib…”
This is where the dominant verbally closes the door on the miscreant’s excuses, pleas, and mitigations, and spells out what’s coming.
As well as confirming their guilt, this is also a foreshadowing of the punishment. The actual spanking may not happen for a while, but there’s no need to hurry when you can let the erotic tension build.
Example dialogue: “You’ve earned yourself a good hard spanking on your bare bottom!”
This is an opportunity for a change of location, the slow, humiliating journey from wherever the scene commenced to where the punishment will happen.
This might involve being sent to the bedroom, or being told to fetch the implement that will be used to smack their bottom and bring it back. It might also involve a period of waiting, like standing in the corner. Don’t skip this, it can be the most psychologically intense part of the entire scene.
Example dialogue: “Go to your room, wait with your nose against the wall, I want to see a bare bum when I walk through the door!”
This is the time for final preparations, like lifting skirts and lowering panties. It’s also an opportunity for intimate inspections to assess their arousal, or for the recipient to be wiped, gagged, plugged, or restrained.
By the end of this stage the recipient will be in the preferred spanking position, and their disciplinarian will be ready to start - though they might like to tease the miscreant, and keep them waiting.
Example dialogue: “Why am I having to put you over my knee again?”
This is when the spanking is administered, there’s no need to hurry, and plenty of opportunity for scolding during deliberate pauses in the spaces between the smacks (be it lecturing, sarcasm, questions the spankee must answer, teasing, or even loving reassurance).
Spankings are better when the sub is more than a passive recipient, and responds to the smacks they receive (some ideas: defiance, indignance, acceptance, even cheekiness).
Example dialogue: “So naughty, needing to be spanked like a naughty little boy!”
This is where the scene is brought to a satisfying conclusion. There might be some immediate aftercare like rubbing, hugging, cuddling, forgiveness, or appreciation for taking their punishment well, especially if there’s been tears.
This is also an opportunity to segue into what happens next, which might be an inspection, corner time, an opportunity to express gratitude to the spanker, or being made to write something whilst sitting on a sore bottom.
Example dialogue: “You can go to bed with a smacked bottom tomorrow night too. Maybe that will help you learn your lesson!”
Progressing through each of these 8 steps allows an enjoyable scene to develop. You won’t feel as if you’re racing to the spanking part, as you’ll be spending time on the psychological and emotional aspects of the scene. Just like stories, it’s important to move towards a satisfying conclusion, so the scene doesn’t feel like it’s just fizzling out.
Bear in mind that it’s quite natural for both partners to become less chatty as the scene intensifies and they sink deeper into their own floaty erotic mindspaces. So don’t be surprised if most of the talking happens in the first half of the scene, by the end you may have gone beyond the need for words anyway.
Those who are inexperienced with roleplaying might like to take a moment to watch the excellent 15 minute short “Marcy Learns Something New”. In this (not explicit) film, the domme teaches the class: “Submission has to be earned’, and the final scene demonstrates how even a nervous novice can impose their authority. Earning implies effort, and in a kinky scene it’s done through issuing instructions, and expecting high standards of obedience. The more effort participants invest in an encounter, the more immersive it becomes.
Seen from this perspective, scolding is far more than just a harsh tone of voice, it’s a means of asserting control, and demonstrating who’s in charge. Once submission is earned, it becomes more than just “a good scene”, it’ll be a “holy shit, I’m still thinking about that scolding you gave me last month” experience.
… 2 …
All kinky scenes involve power exchange, the submissive partner gives up some control, and the dominant partner compensates them by taking the initiative, effectively playing the role of a movie director. That doesn’t mean the submissive meekly shuts up and does what they’re told, their role is to be one of the leading actors, and their participation is vital to ensure the scene doesn’t become a boring monologue.
So, this section is advice for those who like to play the submissive role, or sometimes switch. Your responsibility can be summed up in a sentence: every time the dominant says something, it’s your cue for you to respond.
In improv, newcomers often worry: what do I say? They worry about saying the “wrong thing” and collapsing the scene, whereas in reality the only truly wrong thing to do is remain silent, and say absolutely nothing. So don’t overthink it. Get into the moment, and say the first thing that comes into your mind.
If your notion of what a spanking ‘should’ be like came from watching clips of spanking porn, you might think the dom’s role is basically to look stern, drag the sub into position, and deliver a good whacking. Whilst the sub’s role is simply to yelp, wriggle, and turn a delightful shade of pink.
Spanking videos contain very little talking, as most porn just doesn’t bother with dialogue, as they’re created to be titillating entertainment, not kinky sex coaching films. Hence the familiar setup of a stern individual smacking a mostly passive recipient whose voice is only used for exclamations and yelps. You need to ignore those cliches and get comfortable being playful and making things up, just like we all used to do before we ‘grew up’.
If you remember one thing from this post, I hope that it’ll be to think of scolding like a game of tennis. A good scolding is not a one-way earbashing, but a dialogue, a back-and-forth rally - and the submissive partner has complete freedom in how they decide to play their shot. The idea is not to try to be “clever” and hit a “winner” (through identifying loopholes or contradictions), as this will just collapse the scene into silly arguments. The goal is to keep the rally going in the most interesting or entertaining way possible.
Thus a submissive might respond to strictness with sassiness, or opt to feign innocence, or express a haughty indignance that they’re even subject to such stupid rules at all. Choose whatever suits the mood and character you’re playing. All that matters is both play along, returning the ball, keeping the game going until it reaches a natural satisfying conclusion.
So here’s 10 attitudes - or “returns of serve” the submissive partner can use when improvising their responses during a scolding. Each one shifts the energy in a different direction and invites a different counter-move from the scolder, without ever blocking them.
Sassy / Bratty / Cheeky
Feigned Innocence
Indignant
Indecent
Defiant
Pleading
Evasive
Sycophantic
Silent
Subversive
These responses are like throwing different kinds of substance on the scolder’s fire. Some are fuel and will make the flames flare hotter, others will dampen it, prompting the dominant to change their approach to keep the scene flowing.
You don’t have to stick to just one kind of response, mix up your moves, but be consistent - once you’ve admitted your guilt you can’t start denying it all over again. The best choices are those that raise the sexual tension of the scene.
Which to choose? Here’s an idea for you. Why not write each of these ten moods onto an index card, shuffle them and randomly pick two of them. Then decide which attitude you’ll play first, and which one you’ll segue into for the second half of the scene. Step 4 - the moment when the sentence has been pronounced, is a great time to switch the mood. Just don’t tell your partner which attitudes you’ve chosen, let them work that out for themselves, and give them a surprise to enjoy.
Now let’s talk a bit more about each attitude, so you have an idea of how to play them.
Tone: Smirking, eye-rolling, provocative.
Motivation: you know your spanking is inevitable, so you intend to make it memorable by riling your disciplinarian to increase the erotic tension.
Say things like: “Oops” (sarcastically), “Whatya gonna do about it? Spank me? Promise?”, “Is this supposed to be a punishment?”
Tone: Defensive, poker-faced, wide-eyed.
Motivation: hopes to mitigate their punishment, by denials initially, and then with excuses to reduce their culpability.
Say things like: “But… I really thought I was allowed… I’m so sorry, a complete oversight”, “Did I break a rule? I didn’t mean to! I’ll be on my best behaviour from now on, I swear!”
Tone: Offended, aggrieved, haughty.
Motivation: considers the scolding unfair, and resents being subject to such petty restrictions at all.
Say things like: “That’s such a stupid rule!”, “This is completely unreasonable!”, “It’s like a police state in this house!”
Tone: Lewd, obscene, shameless.
Motivation: already aroused with no pretense of remorse, quite happy to admit strictness is a massive turn-on.
Say things like: “Fuck… if keep yelling at me like that, I’m going to come in my pants”, “God, you’re so hot when you’re mad at me”, “Please, don’t stop what you’re saying, it’s making me drip”.
Tone: Calm, confrontational, challenging.
Motivation: wants to demonstrate punishment holds no fear, almost daring the disciplinarian to follow through on their threats.
Say things like: “Go ahead. I’m a big boy now. Do your worst. I can take it”, “You’re not nearly as scary as you think you are”, or just give a silent stare and a tiny smirk.
Tone: Fearful, tearful, compliant.
Motivation: thinks turning on the waterworks and a trembling voice will mitigate their guilt and reduce the severity of their punishment.
Say things like: “I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry!”, “Please give me a second chance, I promise it will never ever happen again!”, “Please, not a spanking! Anything but a spanking!”
Tone: Weaseling, gaslighting, bargaining.
Motivation: seeks to evade responsibility by questioning the facts, and changing the subject
Say things like: “The rule was a little ambiguous…”, “But if you look at it this way, I actually did quite a positive thing”, “Can we maybe discuss the punishment part later? Like next week when we’ve all calmed down?”
Tone: Overly agreeable, eager to please, insincere.
Motivation: hoping to gain the disciplinarian’s favour in the hope of mitigating any future punishment, through apologies, promises, and insincere praise.
Say things like: “Thank you for being so strict with me. It’s just what I need!”, “You’re the strictest I’ve ever known! And the best!”, “I’ve been looking forward to stripes on my bottom from you all day!”
Tone: Accepting, stoic, fearless.
Motivation: to increase erotic tension by only reacting non-verbally, without attempting to provide justifications or excuses. To let the disciplinarian interpret the silence, and demonstrate what’s coming is not feared.
Do things like: hold eye contact, smirk, preemptively remove clothing, fetch a spanking implement before being told and hand it over.
Tone: Daring, rebellious, impudent.
Motivation: unlike being cheeky for the fun of it, here the misdemeanours are driven by purpose. This is about acting the minx, scamp, or rascal, where their naughtiness is an identity and they’re happy to pay the price of tweaking the dragon’s tail. This attitude is the best fit for those who want to “Top-from-the-Bottom”.
Say things like: “By all means teach me some manners; I’ve been dying to find out if you spank as well as you preach”, “I know how much me being bad turns you on”, “Honestly, the only thing hotter than you being strict is knowing I’m the reason you’re about to lose your temper.”
Most subs will have a few personal favourites, depending on the personality they like to roleplay, which might be meek, or bold, or lewd. So it’s good to be aware of the full range of possibilities, so they can surprise their partner by occasionally behaving unexpectedly. In kinky scenes enjoyment for dominant partners is often psychological rather than physical, so unpredictability helps keep encounters fresh and satisfying.
… 3 …
So now you’ve seen how a roleplay scene can be elaborated, your homework is:
to write down what the corresponding 8 stages would be in your own favourite disciplinary fantasy
then, write down how you might respond in each stage
Do both, regardless of whether you consider yourself dominant or submissive. It’s always worthwhile to see a scene from the opposite point of view.
Write down what you might actually say, as seeing it written down will make it easier to remember, and say aloud. Improvising in the heat of the moment is a skill that you can develop with practice. So when you’re getting started it can help to have your “stage directions” scribbled down on a page beside the bed, just in case your mind goes blank.
Soon I’ll be posting a follow-up with an elaborated example, and you can compare what you’ve written with mine.
Have fun!
