my first permaculture experience was an accidental check-out of the “Permaculture Designer’s Manual” from Tucson’s downtown public library. sounded interesting, but was it a cult? it sure was a big huge book! in the next two weeks it became one of the most important resources for the rest of my life. after asking around, i was introduced to permaculture teachers in the area, and helped to organize a class at this site. in the Sonoran Desert, rainwater harvesting underpins a successful permaculture plan.
if you live in an urban area - where about half of the land is hardscape (roofs, roads, etc.) - and you understand how to use runoff from those sources, you can double the amount of rainwater to go to places where you want to grow things. that is powerful!
