The first time I ever saw snow falling, I was 21.

It fell from the sky like plump feathers and landed on my face and my tongue. I laughed. I cried. It was pure magic and, as long as I live, I will never forget it.

Apparently neither will my children, as they reminded me this morning on our drive to school.

Me: “Do you remember where I was when I first saw snow?”

My older child: “Yes Mum.”

My younger child: “You were 21.”

Older child: “It was on your first trip overseas.”

Me: “Let me tell you where it was though...”

Older child: “It was in Germany.”

Younger child: “In Hamburg.”

Older child: “The people there are called hamburgers.”

Younger child: “And it was sooooo magical.”

There may or may not have been an eye roll.

(I may or may not be a chronic story repeater.)

It’s amazing to me that I went from a person who never thought twice about snow to someone who would spend the rest of her life chasing it, purely because of that one moment.

I will never forget Hamburg.

And apparently, I will never let anyone else forget it either.

What’s that one moment for you? The time your entire life changed and a whole new slice of the world opened up?

Hey there… Enjoyed this week’s read?

Also here are two other substacks of mine that have resonated really well that you may not have read:

  1. That time I hooned around Italy with three girlfriends and got us stranded

  2. What I want to do before I turn 50
