I firmly believe that thrifting and romanticising your life come hand in hand.
Alongside revelling in the delightful thrill of the unknown, as you are never quite sure what you will uncover, charity shops are often treasure troves for a whole range of items that can add a simple touch of whimsey to your every day.
Drawing on my many years of experience perusing charity shops, I’ve compiled a list of items that can help you romanticise the ordinary, even on a tight budget.
Some suggested items for your next charity shop adventure…
Picnic blanket - any robust blanket will do, ideally one with a plaid print to add that nostalgic feel. You might even be lucky enough to find a fully stocked picnic basket!
Thermos - also an ideal item for summer (or autumn) picnics
Crockery - charity shops are always chock full of things like plates and mugs, so are the perfect source for the likes of dainty teacups with matching saucers or side plates with retro patterns that make your morning toast feel that much more exciting.
Vintage summer dresses - any pretty summer dress will add some whimsey to your wardrobe but there is something especially magical about finding one from a different era
Oversized men’s shirts - an affordable layering piece, made extra cosy if you can find one made from natural materials e.g., cotton or linen
Old books - serving as both reading material and beautiful decorations
Wall art - charity shops are perfect for gathering art over time, meaning you can design your own personalised gallery wall
Tote bags - perfect for carrying your thrifted buys, especially if you can find one with a cute design!
Baskets - these offer aesthetically pleasing storage e.g., for craft materials, books, or pantry items etc
Napkins or tablecloths - really any linen item that can elevate your meals
Apron - to instantly add a sense of whimsey to cooking
Glass jars - these are super affordable and versatile items that can be used to store food, make dressings or even used as a vase for dried flowers - whatever you fancy!

Postcards/cards - these can be sent to loved ones, displayed as wall art or cut up for junk journaling
Washi tape - really any craft material would work, but I think there is something especially romantic about washi tape and it’s a fraction of the cost if you can find it second hand
Old tins - one of my most prized possessions is my ‘Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady’ designed tin that I got from Vinted and now houses our tea bags.
