pool knitting, pickles, and duck dad

There’s a coffee table book that I cling to like it carries the wisdom of a 1000 sages. It’s because it does. The book is called In the Company of Women, and it was written/compiled by Grace Bonney of DesignSponge (who you will absolutely know if you were lucky enough to be a part of the golden age of blogs).

This book is a collection of interviews from various creative and entrepreneurial women. Their wisdom is an endless well that I just want to swim in (if swimming in wells was a thing).

There’s one individual, Michele Quan, who drops one liners like it’s the most casual thing in the world. Here’s one that’s sticking with me lately:

Q: What is your personal or professional motto?
A: Let go or be dragged.

To someone (me) who has fully committed to a death grip on life, this might have actually given me vertigo. Let go? LET GO?!

But here’s the thing… she’s right. When my death grip is at it’s grippiest, I am fully being dragged. So maybe it’s time to try something new.

One thing I’m letting go of (or really, really trying to) is not explaining myself. This obviously applies to when I say no to something, but it also applies to any life choices. No explanations are needed (my stomach already feels queasy).

✿ Our local pool opened last weekend. I’m not really a get in the pool mom. I’m more of a giving a thumbs up from the grass every time my kid says ‘mom watch this’ kind of mom. So in between all the thumbs up I was giving, I had some time for pool knitting, which is like regular knitting, just at the pool. Currently working on a new design - the Bitterroot Pullover. It’s one of those projects where I stop to just stare at it every few rows. It’s that good.

✿ Rowan has been saying “I’m in a pickle” a lot. And if you just take a minute and think about a painfully cute 5 year old saying that, then I think you’ll understand why this made the list.

✿ My children gifted me some rhododendron blooms at the park. The pollen might murder me, but at least it looks pretty while doing it. (To be fair, I don’t know what pollen is viciously attacking me, but something is out to kill right now.)

✿ Rion is going to be gone for a few days and the girls were so distraught that they created Duck Dad. Duck Dad is supposed to be Rion, but just with a duck hat. I think they nailed it.
