On 2nd June 2024 I wrote a substack article a few days after the glittering Israel independence day gala events in NSW and Victoria with gushing speeches from both State Premiers.
At the time I remember being disgusted by the tone-deaf inappropriateness of them attending these functions during the horror unfolding in Gaza. It was particularly potent as a new atrocity was unfolding that very day with images of people being burned alive in tents in Rafah lit up by Israeli ordinance1.
Since then the genocide has increased exponentially and the true expansive horror of Israel’s plans and aggression has become clear. A plan that was seeking an excuse to execute.
And execute they did.
What has also become clear is the complicity of NSW Premier Chris Minns and the true nature of his long-term grooming by the Israeli lobby.
I noticed that a photo from 2022 in the article is all the more poignant today. The image is from the gala dinner that year and Minns is the Opposition leader. Yet he is placed front and centre next to the pro-Israel lobbyists and Israeli Ambassador - with the actual Premier Dominic Perrottet standing next to him clearly not the focus2.
Standing next to Minns is the then President of ECAJ Jillian Segal who the previous year at a rally supporting Israel during “Operation Guardian of the Walls”3 strikes on Gaza in 2021 declared4:
“we are zionists - we must drive back anti-Zionism”
In July 2024 just over a month after the gala dinner Segal was appointed to the Government paid role of “Australian special envoy to combat antisemitism” (ASECA). With a clear bias for pro-Israel and political zionism viewpoints.
Note that the ASECA role is part of a global SECCA network co-ordinated by the World Jewish Congress in Israel chaired by Ronald Lauder. The de-facto Chair of SECCA is US envoy Israeli-American Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun. Kaploun is described as a right-wing Chabad zionist and Miriam Adelson ally5. This would suggest pushing a particular viewpoint into community groups and now the Australian Government.
Looking back at my 2024 article, with hindsight it shows that my incredulity at the power of the pro-Israel lobby in Australia at the time of writing was well founded.
My article subtitle choice at the time is something that I felt in my bones - “something is VERY wrong here…”
And it still is. And it has to change.
