For far too many years, the town of Fucking in Austria was getting the wrong kind of attention. Tourists would visit from English speaking countries around the globe just to get a selfie next to the famous sign on the only road into town. The only sign which has more annual visitors is the one on the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard and that one is way bigger and it lights up too.
The townsfolk of Fucking were getting more and more infuriated by the increasing number of visitors, and the increasing costs of having to repair and replace their sign due to abuse and on more than a few occasions, outright theft. People were coming to the town and stealing the Fucking sign.
After a vote in November of 2020, it was decided that the town would be renamed to something a lot less amusing to English speakers and on January 1st 2021, the town of Fugging was born. Not Fricken, or Friggin or Effing which were not even remotely considered by the committee, and would have made more English Speaking sense, but these are simple Austrian folk who speak German, so Fugging it is.
STP mentioned the town of Fucking in 2010 in a post about funny Austrian place names, and it would be a shame not to revive that post here.

The entire population of Austria has a weird sense of humor and who can blame them, having produced a long list of celebrities including Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a string of famous composers such as Strauss, Strauss, Mozart, Falco and Strauss. And Adolf Hitler.
